Will let you know how it turns out.

Based on the reviews its not a game that modern audiences are in to anymore.

got the pay to beta, I liked it, very Old school with just enough updates to make it feel like what it is, an updated classic. The pay to beta was bit buggy, so had some rough spots wondering if i sucked or the game was rick rolling me (see even old internet memes for an old game). major complaint, to short, but Im used to those 80-120 hour games of the past. and you are for sure correct on one thing, modern audience... um.. no, not your thing.

I bit on this during one of the earlier beta stages (after telling myself several times not to), before all of the classes/races were available and only the first area of the game was accessible. As expected, it was buggy and unpolished, but an enjoyable experience all the same. Definitely not going to enjoy mainstream success, the grid-based movement alone will turn off many players. But if you are looking for a throwback old school RPG, I would say this is worth a look.

M&M (after it went from RPG to potato) was always a very easy game .. almost "for children". And when it got more complicated and started to have design issues i stopped bothering.

OP, how much fun are you expecting out of it?

Old school. REALLY OLD. Like you can only turn in 4 directions. The previous several games allowed 360 degrees. Combat is strictly turn based, again going back before M&M 6 even.

Graphics are decent, and with the right mouse button you can look around. But there isnt a lot to see. Anything you need to interact with is right in your face.

Combat is fun. Your warriors get loads of options like taunt and sunder right at level 1 with basic skills. Mages are of course limited until you buy some decent spells.
Inventory is shared among all members, and now any item only takes up one slot.

Most of the equipment you see in the first town is not usable by anyone, as it requires expert or better. Was only able to buy shoes and leather gloves for most of my team.

4 races to start with, each with 3 unique classes available. Each class has an upgraded class that has some super abilities.

Loads of magic schools and spells. Light and Dark are available right from the beginning which is a nice new addition. Also a new school of time magic thats actually not bad at all.

Easy access to scrolls and spells that reveal traps & secrets, so even a party full of warriors isnt held back in dungeons.

You can have up to two hirelings and they are cheap & provide decent abilities, just like in M&M 7 and 8.
In fact you start off with a scout and before entering your first dungeon you get a guardsman. I was also able to find another scout, a goblin, and a horse just in the first town. (Need to find out what they do, but I think I already know)

Good sounds, music. Everything about the interface and gameplay is fairly customizable from the options menu. Levels load very quickly. Its almost a 10 gig game, but theres a long FMV at the start and I suspect more as the story progresses.

Oh, the in game bestiary is nice. Something I miss from many games.

One kill and you get loads of data. 6 kills and you get complete data. The journal and quest systems are easy and clean.
As are character inventory and stats. Easy to drag skills & spells to your command bar too. You can even play with just the mouse thanks to available on-screen movement buttons.

OK, I think I already see a problem. Based on my exploring so far it seems the world is INCREDIBLY small. And there really arent too many dungeons. And they are small as well. Nor are there many cities.

Thats a far cry from all the previous games that gave you massive worlds to explore and tons of dungeons.

I bought it and have it updating right now. Based on the description of 20 dungeons, 60 monsters, 2 towns and 1 city, and being only $30 for deluxe, I figured it would likely be a small game.

Still, hoping it's at least fun.

Looks like I won't find out. I didn't realize this game required UPlay (didn't know about UPlay as I hadn't encountered it previously). I already find it irritating that I can't buy a single player game as a download to my computer without being tied to Steam. I have no desire to be tied to both.

I sent a help ticket asking for a refund.

Heroes 3 is by far the best. Heroes 2 and 1 are good as well.

4 is garbage. 5 onward is meh. Graphics are nice, but gameplay is inferior to 3.

As for M&M: I think I am liking the earlier games better. More options for character customization, many more dungeons. More towns. More people to interact with, shops, hirelings. More and better spells, skills, equipment.

8 was especially good, you could play as monsters. You can even get up to 2 dragons in your party. Lots of fun. You could also eventually upgrade your mages to liches, they got more power and some immunities. And they look freakin badass.

Back in the... early 90's I think, I wrote a MM3 character editor with a friend of mine. It was pretty popular freeware for awhile. But I think MM3 was the last Might and Magic I actually got into.

GMG just put up a 30% off discount code that's good for MMX.

Thanks for the heads up. So this game cannot be played offline?

Yeah I bought this game as well.

It's real old school, and it makes no apologies for it. The problem is that old school is not always the best school. The grid based movement is artificially limiting for zero reasons. There's no real reason I can see for it to be honest. They would have been much better off going with the much more familiar free roam movement Might and Magic 6-9 and 99% of modern games have.

That said, there's a lot to like. The combat is fun in its own way. It has a ton of stats which I like (I'm a stats whore), and it's just a fun game despite the grid based movement.

Its fake old school. Too small, too little stuff to interact with.
They were just lazy and wanted a quick buck from an established franchise. The older games were a lot more fun.

There's a positive review from RockPaperShotgun which I found very surprising. I honestly thought it'd be crappy low budget RPG like MM9.
The presentation (story, graphics and cutscene) truly was low budget but supposedly later on the combat is satisfyingly tactical. He "detest" the game in the beginning and now loving it.

Guess I better try it some time.
