Their fault for making unreasonable demands, not mine. $15 per hour is not a good ROI for that skill level....and I rarely eat that crap anyway. I know people with real skills who barely make that. How are burger flippers entitled?

Good systematic farming is just planning, so you can lop the whole fruit tree and send it to market, letting the customer pick the fruit. The next year's trees are behind them and new ones being planted to replace what has been taken. It's the future and we won't need migrant labor to pick apples, cherries, etc.

You should genetically engineer the fruits to walk themselves into the bushel. Chopping down fruit trees yearly is incredibly wasteful since they don't fruit for a few years.

As somebody in an adjacent business I would put kiosks in if the minimum wage was $5. Technology is so cheap to deploy now that it makes far more sense from basically every angle to use it instead of humans for this kind of work.

The push for automation has been going on much longer than the silly $15 per hour demands by burger flippers, but those demands are sure to hasten the process. Simple economics: the higher the cost of labor, the money you will spend to automate to reduce your expenses.

I guess it's somewhat of a cautionary tale. There's been a lot of hubbub about $15 per hour for essentially menial jobs. Supply and demand have prevented that from happening, but the agitation has led to an increase in the drive to automate away those jobs. So now the workers essentially got a double whammy: they didn't get the $15 per hour they demanded, and they will lose the jobs they have to automation sooner than before.

Welcome to 2008: WAWA

Much like self-service checkouts, foodservice kiosks give c-store operators an opportunity to speed service, allocate labor dollars more efficiently, upsell menu items and reduce order errors. And while most players continue to adopt a wait-and-see attitude, many are already moving forward.

Basically Wendy's and the other major FF chains are just behind the curve. Self serve kiosks have been in use for quite some time and have allowed nontraditional chains like WAWA (convenience stores/ gas stations) to move into the FF market without massive capital and human investments.

WAWA uses sandwich kiosks, and a couple sandwich makers, to drive traffic into the rest of their business.

So again, nothing to do with $15/hr. Already happening.
