i recently got a script for wellbutrin as an aide to help me quit smoking.
ive heard other success stories with people who have used it.
i am aware of the side effects which unsettle me a little.
have you used wellbutrin, was it successful?

jeez, are you having a lot of trouble quitting?

personally, i'd rather not take drugs that will have psychological effects (even temporary) unless it is absolutely necessary.

Some people have a terrible time trying to quit smoking.

Unless you have smoked for awhile and tried to quit than you have no idea how hard it is or can be.

To the OP, I am currently taking wellbutrin to help me quit as well. Is it helping? I think it's taking the edge off. Is it the silver bullet you are looking for...no way. I have gone from a pack a day to about 3 cigs a day, though. Just a little further....

I did quit using Wellbutrin but it really messed me up. I couldn't sleep well and acted pretty strange (or so my friends said). I had to stop the Welbutrin and went back to smoking.
I quit by using the Nicotrol Inhaler (its an Rx). http://www.nicotrol.com/
It is a totally awesome tool. You might want to consider it before taking a mood altering drug like Welbutrin.
Just my 2 cents.

I used Wellbutrin to help me quit and it was very helpful. Wellbutrin flips off the craving switch in your brain and it makes them taste bad. In conjunction with the meds, I attended smoking cessasion classes. The classes tell you to pick a day to quit, usually 7-10 days after you begin the Wellbutrin. Within 5 days, the taste of cigarettes were making me sick to my stomach and giving me a headache, so I quit on that 5th day. After 30 days I stopped taking the Wellbutrin and have had absolutely no problems with cravings. I have been smoke free for over 7 years now.

Edit: If the Wellbutrin isnt working, you may need to up to a full dose... they usually start you off on a half-dose and then move you up if you need more.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

So you would not want temporary, mostly mild side effects to help stop the addicting, deadly habit of smoking?

Aren't you the sharp one. :disgust:

Hang in there buddy and don't give up!

You might look into acupuncture too. My sister hasn't had a smoke in 16 yrs and that's what she did. Sh1t, maybe I should follow my own advice :)

I just quit about a month ago. I used wellbutrin. It works wonders. (I quit before, maybe four years ago using wellbutrin and it worked then. After starting again after a year or so i've tried most other methods than the one i am about to describe and none worked).

Use wellbutrin for two weeks and continue smoking. Let the drugs get into your system. (ignore those 'don't use drugs' people-this is A LOT better for you than smoking and you're not going to get addicted to it). Pick a date to quit, and then stop smoking completly at that date. Use either the patch or the gum while continuing the wellbutrin. Wean your self off of that after about six weeks (you can just follow the recommendations on the products for the best results-i actually only used the patch for a week, then the gum for a week, slowly using less and less gum).

Getting used to the wellbutrin is the worst part because you will have difficulty sleeping, but it will get better.

Good luck man. You can do it. Learn to relax and just let those moments of fiending pass by.

I took Wellbutrin for a little over two weeks. It did take the edge and did help me quit. I honestly think I could not have done it with it. Also though I was in the right frame of mind too. That is really the key, to have the attitude to do it. It is hard but I wish you the best. If you need any help, email me and I will do what I can. Quiting can give you back so much of your life, not just long term but short term also. When you quit take that money for when you would buy smokes and put it in a separate bank account. You will see the money you are saving also. Good Luck my friend

Took it for about a month
Did help to take the edge off but ...

lol
after a month it built up a high enough level in my body that I ended up in the hospital for a week :(
don't remember much of that week as I was on good drugs
swelled up to almost twice my normal size :(

but it was just an alergic reaction that some very small number of people have :)

I quit several times cold and twice on welbutrin. it messed with my head and constipated me, but it did help with quitting.

The last (and final) time I quit, it was without welbutrin, but I had the additional incentive of the doctor telling me I had the start of COPD.

Good Luck, and the most important thing is to remember that once you quit, you should not ever give in to the temptation to "have just one"

Uhh, the OP never mentioned he was having a hard time, so that's why I asked. I'd file this one under "absolutely necessary".

So, why don't you take your righteousness and stick it up your arse.

I do not like Wellbutrin. It's an anti-depressant. It really fvcked up my wife.
Smoking may be hard to kick, but now you'll be addicted to an anti-depressant.

I just think there are better ways to quit smoking rather than going on this particular drug.

it worked for a relative of mine, but she gained a lot of weight.

she had tried numerous times to quit on her own and wellbutrin was the only thing that worked.

that said, i wouldn't want to go on it because of the side effects, but maybe you'll do ok with it.
