Well, You Guys Were Right

In different threads on chocolate, Hershey gets bashed a lot. I always liked their bars, and while they weren't the best, I thought they were a decent bar, at a decent price. I figured those bitching were expecting Porsche performance on a Kia budget.

Well, it's been a long time since I had a Hershey bar, and I got a bunch for Xmas. Damn the quality's slipped on these. They taste like the budget chocolate I used to get as kid for Easter. Sweet, waxy, and little chocolate taste. The ones with the almonds are only edible because of the almonds. I'm not sure I'll be able to force the plain "chocolate" bars down.

Way to ruin the name of a good company guys...

Hershey hasn't actually changed THAT much.

They never were a good bar. I was never really impressed with them growing up, that's for sure. And I love chocolate.

But you might be noticing it more because you may have had much better chocolate recently, as good chocolate is easy to find at just about any major store these days. Lindt is a very safe purchase for delicious chocolate, especially their 70% Dark Chocolate. mmmmmmmmmmmmmdrooooool

From wikipedia:

The Hershey Company began to change the ingredients of some of its products in 2008, in order to replace some of the relatively expensive cocoa butter with cheaper oil substitutes. This was done to cut costs, rather than having to raise prices in the marketplace for products containing cocoa butter.

The thing about chocolate is it takes time to make it right. Every chocolate particle has a fat and a flavor component. The longer you stir it, the more it breaks down into smaller particles, each is still complete.

With good chocolate, you take a small bite and it feels like it fills your whole mouth with chocolate, buttery goodness. You can actually get high eating good chocolate.

Some European countries have laws that chocolate is to be processed for a certain amount of time else it can't be sold there. America doesn't, thus our chocolate isn't as good.

How much would they have to raise prices; 5¢ a bar tops?! That's not an egregious increase to maintain quality.

cadbury's fruit & nut is the best budget bar ever created

I would assume when your candy bar increases while all the others stays the same in a store or vending machine is the issue.

Can't remember the last time I had just a plain hershey candy bar though as chocolate alone is not worth it to me unless it has caramel or such in it also.

but you save 5 cents on a lot of bars...that is a lot of money....

most people in the US have been exposed to only herseys. So, we are pretty ignorant when it comes to chocolate. Like they say, ignorance is bliss.

Just slap some peanut butter on it to mask the taste, that should get you through the "junk" chocolate

they also moved to mexico, if i'm not mistaken.
Which could have been a good thing as Mexico grows the world's best cocoa cultivar. But, alas, Hershey is still making the same stuff we've come to expect of them.

For good budget chocolate try Safeway's store brand premium chocolates. They are quite good. Except for the black current and almonds bar, that one tastes like Robitussin.

The only chocolate I eat is 100% cacao bakers chocolate. I grind it in a food processor and use it as a topping for ice cream, cereal, yogurt, etc...

Hershey is good if you dont know any better.
Next time you are at the grocery store look for the exotic, expensive chocolate. Treat yourself to a single, small bar.
You'll never go back.
