For those of you on well water. What do you use to get rid of the sulphur smell? I was using chlorine tabs from the compant that put the well in. But another company says that chlorine tabs will kill you or cause cancer.

Brita filter. If the well water isn't good enough to drink straight out, usually don't drink it.

Uh, don't think it should smell like sulfur. Might want to get that tested.

for whole house or just faucet? any carbon filter will work, but the media won't last. I've got the sulfide smell in my well water too, and using a big whole house backwash filter with regular carbon in it for about a year now. I picked regular carbon because it was the cheapest solution and I don't plan on living here for long. IF I have to do it again, I will probably get KDF or catalytic carbon, but they are like 4x more expensive. I used a shower head filter with kdf in it before I got the whole house filter, and that worked too. good luck!

I have to put chlorine tablets in my septic, but not in my water system. In fact, I don't think there is a way I could get them in even if I wanted to. You should contact your county offices and see what they recommend.

We have a bad problem with the iron/rusty water here, and sulpher is bad too but seems to be only from the hot water. This has something to do with some kind of rods (or lack thereof, not sure which) in the hot water tank.

We just blast the well occasionally with bleach treatment, also have a filter for the whole house and an additional one on the refrigerator for drinking/cooking.

For the love of god don't put chlorine tablets into your incredibly clean groundwater. That defeats the entire purpose of drinking out of a well.

If administered incorrectly it also pollutes your land, your well, and the water.

Chlorine tablets in your septic system defeats the whole purpose. Chlorine kills bacteria. You want lots of bacteria in your septic system. Thats also why you shouldn't use alot of bleach or harsh disenfectants if you're on a septic system.

As for the sulfer smell ... some wells have it, some don't. It's not really a health issue AFAIK, but hot showers are really a treat. A carbon filter system will take care of it.

You put cholorine in your septic tank? Wouldn't that kill all the bacteria that makes the septic system effective.
This happens alot when people have their washing machine dump into the septic tank, and they use chlorine bleach.

Get a nice filteration system in the basement.

If administered incorrectly it also pollutes your land, your well, and the water.

Sodium Hypochlorate (68%, dry) and liquid household bleach (5.25%) are used on a daily basis to disinfect wells in Louisiana. The amount of disinfectant used is determined by the size of the casing and volume of water in the well plus associated appurtenances (pressure tank).

Do you know how deep the well is? Do others in your area have the same problem?

[edit]

After thinking about it for a minute, your options are:

1. Filter. Your best bet is to go ahead and use a filter. Maintenance is a pain and they are expensive, but that should make the problem go away.

2. New well. Find out how deep your current well is and ask an experienced water well driller if there are deeper, cleaner aquifers in the area.

Sulfur/sulfides in groundwater are a common. Chlorinating a well is only good for killing bacteria; it will not remove the smell.
