It's Wednesday...I'm bored....how about a baseball thread?

I am speechless that we blew a three-run lead against the Brewers?!?!! With Maddux on the mound? How many times have we either fanned or popped up with runners on base this year? How many errors commited by our suddenly-crap defense? It just pains me to even watch the games anymore...it's like we suddenly warped back to the 80s Braves.

Anywho, how's bout your team? Good? Bad? Let's hear it.:)

Well, I live in Cincinnati, so I guess that requires me to be a Reds fan... which I am, but I'm more an A's fan.

The Reds have somehow lucked their way into a 16-9 record so far. I still have the feeling that they're headed for a very steep cliff.

They have a good record, but their runs scored-against so far is 104-100 -- not impressive at all, and not even close to what a 16-9 team would normally have. I think it's all smoke and mirrors. The starting pitching has been good, based on their ERA, but bad based on everything else. For example, Joey Hamilton has allowed 31 hits and 21 walks in 30 innings -- not a good ratio at all -- yet, his ERA is 3.30. Chris Reitsma is similar. I think the team ERA is about to take off.

Good deal. I got to give you you're first 1 in your user ratings.

The Reds are doing pretty good. Getting fairly decent pitching but we'll see how long it lasts.

Tigers - Today they're at 8-17 and 7 1/2 out of 1st. Two weeks ago they were 9 1/2 back. It's just a matter of time. :)

LOL! He's just cranky that ESPN2 doesn't broadcast CPL Counter-Strike Clan matches.;)

I just found out we're playing the ChiSox, Detroit, and BoSox for interleague this year. I'm somewhat hopeful that we'll get some wins out of these, but if we can't even beat the damn Brewers....I dunno.

Does Scott Winchester still play for the Reds? He was my closest childhood friend growing up in Michigan. Lived across the street from me.

I am more of a college baseball fan. The Univ of Alabama is ranked #3 in the nation and is in first place in the SEC.
I'm finally going to get to see them for the first time this season when they travel to Athens to play Georgia this weekend.

As for the Braves, same story this year even with the new faces like Castilla and Sheffield. They keep leaving an obscene amount of runners on base almost every game. All the injuries haven't helped but it still gets old.

Bleck...of course, the A's would be better if we still had Giambi the Elder...

But in the end, he's gotta do what's good for himself so more power to the guy :)

Dude the Braves need to oust Cox. They get there and then self-destruct every year(except '95). They have a good team with --what was thought- to be a good infield but 1st base there is awful--they need to give Helms the every day job and get him going. BJ sucked(no pun intended). Giles is capable at the plate of 20-70-.280 but he scares me on defense. Furcal just doesnt have his head in the game b/c he is confused about how old he is. Castilla is decent at 3rd but his .220 avg doesnt help. Just let Sheff get healthy, Chipper needs him in the lineup or he'll never see pitches to hit. As for pitching, Maddux is getting older, Tommy is the Dick Clark of baseball and after that there is nothing. Milwood belongs as a spot started and Lopez is awful. Yung Bong is just too cool a name to be any good. I'm not sold on Blanco being Maddux's catcher either. He shakes off more than he has in the past. Go Braves!

I'm not that big of a baseball fan, but the O's are doing much better than I expected. They are almost at .500 which is great for them lately. :)

I'm kinda beginning to wonder about the management as well. Not sure that Cox is really the culprit, but there has to be some reason that no one is hitting and our infield defense is so pathetic. Mazzone seems to be an effective pitching coach...but then again maybe the talent on the team just hid his lack thereof. I don't think Pendleton as batting coach was a good idea. He's a great guy, and was great as a Brave, but I don't think he's qualified to make the transition to coach. I'd rather see them try to woo someone like Tony Gwynn or even Paul O'Neil (both great contact hitters) if they want a recent ex-player as coach.

I have also pretty much lost faith in Schuerholtz. Getting Sheff was great but Albie (19 game loser)? Blanco (bats like a pitcher)? And what's with all the n00bies everywhere? Guys like Derosa, Giles, etc have a ton of talent, but they all need about 2-3 more years in AAA learning to vacuum up infield grounders before they do any more damage error-wise. I guess I never appreciated how automatic guys like Belliard were as I was too annoyed at his inability to hit the damn ball.

yEAH i'm not ready to give up just yet on Cox but he needs some pressure put on him. I think Wes is afraid of the ball and that's not very good to be at 1st. He just looks frazzled when a shorthop comes his way. I still miss the Lemmer!! And what happened to Blauser since he left? He had a decent year or two somewhere like the Cubbies.
I agrre about Pendleton, he was a good player but i wouldnt call him great. I am not sure Gwynn would sign anywhere that isnt SD. Where's Paul Molitor coahing--and if he isnt i would like him! I never understood why they got Albie--and paid him as much as they did...unreal. Maybe a Marlin firesale will happen again and we can grab Beckett or Burnett!!!
Mets suck!

It usually takes half the season to put the wheels on up there. I think the last 4 seasons the Mets have had the hottest second half in the league. Last year, until the last week of the season, they had the best second half record in the league. The year before that, they climbed back in and took the wildcard and then swept the D-Backs and Cards without problem.

I'm very optimistic about the Mets right now. If they can actually have a lead going to the all-star break (or right in the thick of things), they could be a very serious contender.

I hate the Braves...but that is no suprise since I'm a Mets fan. But really, who wants to see them blow ANOTHER playoff series? That is getting to be a broken record. Maybe if they do bad enough, Cox will start beating his wife again and get thrown in jail. Then they'd be able to clean house and start fresh. And then, maybe they will realize that starting pitching can get you to the playoffs, but a crappy bullpen will make sure you don't win it all.

and who woulda guessed the braves could do sooo badly when glavine is having an amazing month on the mound. he is traditionally a slow starter. always better in the second half. i'm really curious to see how he could improve during the second half on this last month.

as to the issue of COX, he has to go. :( I've never liked him. he is especially bad in the playoffs, over manages the offense and let's his starters stay in too long. he really sux.

Any baseball player with nipple rings is cool. Also, do you remember last year, while during warmups before an inning, he drilled the pickup truck that Billy the Marlin was riding in, and broke the passenger door window? Crazy bastard.

hehe...I have to admit the Mets look pretty good this year. They whupped on us back in April when they were in town (I was there to wintness that oh-so-painful 8-run eighth innning).

Yeah, it's weird to see him doing so well. He's always been a good pitcher, but I figured with his lack of velocity he'd be the guy on the team most burned by the "new" strike zone. He's always been one to really live on the outside edge of the plate....or maybe a little outside the outside edge.;) Go figger.

I still like Cox, but I'm guessing they'll start looking around if we have a few grim years in a row. I would dearly love to get a guy like Piniella. Cox is too reliant on the long ball and it shows with our current total inability to move the g*ddamn runners. Pisses me off to see so many stranded or no runs scored after a leadoff double. There's just no excuse for that.
