Show us on this doll how the bad storm butt-f***ed you.

I happened to look up at my surveillance monitor and I have to do a double take. There appears to be a strange vehicle in my driveway. It's got about an inch of snow on it so it's been there for a little while at least. I go to the front door to confirm and indeed, there is some feral SUV sitting in MY driveway. I look in the snow for the drag marks that surely must have been left by cojones that big being hauled around. As I turn my head and look toward the road,, I see the problem. A 25ft pine tree has split in half and is completely blocking the road. It was like a scene from TWD. Laying right across the road, almost perpendicular.

I realize immediately that I'm going to have to get out there with a chain saw and try to at least clear enough of it so cars can pass. I live near the beginning of a very long dead end street. So this essentially traps everyone on my street at home. That's not good. But I have a small spark of optimism that maybe the township can help me out here. I call the police. No answer. I let ring for over a minute and nothing. OK, so things are probably a lot worse than I anticipated. Called 911 and they were able to put me through to a dispatcher. Yup, there's all sorts of emergencies they're dealing with so I'm on my own.

Of course the battery on my electric chainsaw is dead. I can't wait for it to charge. So I get out the pole saw which turns out to be just long enough to almost get all the way through the trunk. Of course the saw keeps getting trapped in the cut so I'm not making a lot of progress.I do manage to make two complete cuts but nothing is budging.

About then two neighbors come strolling up the street. One has a headlamp and a real chain saw. Stihl. Great saws. He makes very short work of the trunk while I whittle down the branches. The other guy helps me clear them away. I'm not sure how long we were at it but it didn't seem very long. Less than an hour. We managed to get the road completely cleared.

I now have a front yard full of debris, but I'll deal with that once the snow melts.

Kudos on the can-do spirit. Nice to see people dig themselves out rather than relying on someone else to do it.

We were partially spared. The rain/snow line set up a little farther north and west than expected and my area spent some time on the happy side of it, so accumulations have been lower than feared. I got the rare experience of shoveling my driveway during a bout of thundersnow. 30 degrees, snowing like a bitch, wind howling and visibility very low, yet we could still see lightning flashing through the clouds, that's not something that happens often.

I bet those seasons are awesome though.
The seasons are amazing. Well, two of them are anyway. Everything starts going to shit in the spring, and the bad old days are approaching, aka make the stupid grass shorter season.

I didn't get anything but beautiful snow today, but a lot of it melted. Made for a pleasant day off work anyway. Went to homedepot to look for chainsaw safety gear. I should know better than that. I don't understand how such a huge building can never have what I need :^S Ended up going to tractorsupply, and some husqvarna chaps and a helmet system. I really only wanted the helmet for the screen guard. I can't wear safety glasses, and I was getting tired of sawdust in my eyes. Never wore safety gear for the little bit of sawing I did, but I'm gonna be getting into more technical work this weekend, and don't want to ruin my safety record with a trip to the hospital.

Live in an urban area and everything was going fine until about 6pm tonight the internet/tv FIOS went down. Couldn't troubleshoot it so I looked out the window and voila, about 7 dangling cables from the telephone pole across the street. I see no branches down on the ground, nothing that could have knocked the cables down but down they are. I'll be going out there to walk the dog in a few so I'll check it out closer but it's really bizarre. These FIOS cables are quite thin, I fail to see how the weight of snow could have brought them all down but something had to related to snow amirite?

Final tally is we got freaking lucky. Last night we were solidly in the 6-12" band and overnight it got upped to 8-14". I'd say at least 10" actually fell, but since we were on the rain/snow mix line for about 6 hours it fell and melted immediately without accumulating. It didn't start sticking until maybe 4pm and by then it was half over. Total on the ground now is maybe 5" or so and that's a real big difference. This snow is the weight and consistency of wet cement, it's doing a real number on tree limbs and bushes, my forsythias are almost flattened and it looks like a hurricane blew through. Neighbors lost half of an old elm, branches down everywhere and lots of power outages. I shudder to think how bad it would have been if we got the full 14".

Embrace the storm! It builds character!

We got about 16". The crap at the end of the driveway was pretty intense, even for my snowblower. I'm probably gonna shovel the deck later this morning.

I was going to get salty here, but it seems you've learned your lesson. Carry on. ;)

Heard on the radio parts of Maine could see another 2ft of snow today.

Ski resorts will be happy. Everyone else, not so much.

Man, what a freaky storm. Just 20 miles in one way or another made a huge difference. We got lucky and got 5". Maybe 15 miles north and west it was 12" and another 15 miles further north and west got 20". I would not have wanted to shovel 20" of this stuff, if was a back-breaker just dealing with the 5".

Yeah this is the kind of snow you don't want. The consistency of it combined with the just slightly below freezing temp made for a hair raising trip home. Cars off the road, lots of people getting rear ended. I have an unpaved driveway that is fairly steep, but in an SUV with good snow tires it's usually no worries. My plow guy lives just down the road and takes care of me, uses Swedish logging tech + articulating plow instead of a truck, does a great job. He did his thing this afternoon and I came home to a scant 2-3" of snow on the driveway. I barely made it up the hill coming home today. Mental note get better snow tires for next winter, maybe cleats.

Also, praise be to the god Ariens. It's storms like this that really make you appreciate a good thrower.
