Well, that was an "interesting" start to the day...

Woke up around 4:30am this morning to the sound of my upstairs neighbor's smoke alarm. At first I thought I was just half asleep and imagining things, but after a few more minutes I decided to go to my neighbor's apartment and see what's up. I smelled smoke and started pounding on the door but I didn't get a response. Called 911 and everyone short of the National Guard showed up (small town, not a whole lot going on usually). Turns out the guy passed out with a cigarette in his hand, which fell and lit up a nearby pack of matches. The corner of his mattress and some sheets caught fire; the firefighters got in before he could get seriously hurt (just some smoke inhalation).

PSA: If you're going to smoke in your apartment, be careful. I'm very glad he's not hurt, but he definitely could have been.

Now go up there and punch the fucker in the mouth for almost burning the place down.

Seriously. I'm also going to call management this afternoon to give them a heads-up, because something tells me that this guy won't be coming forward on his own. I'm sure the guy's embarrassed and whatnot, but I'm not going to live underneath someone that does careless shit like this.

At the very least, they probably won't renew his lease. I would hope they'd boot him out sooner, tho.

I just got off the phone with someone at the landlord's office and also sent a follow-up email with all of the details so I have something in writing. I'm hoping that they kick him out.

I hope so.

Thanks for making me feel better. My day started with the key breaking off in the office door. Seems rather inconsequential, now. 🙂

awesome job, xanis, you literally probably saved this guy's life.

He may have been out of it from smoke inhalation or something. Hopefully he comes by to thank you personally.

speaking from experience: The guy sounds like he was passed out from drinking. I left may cig burns in many rugs. Never even knew I had lit them up, did it in my sleep.

I honestly don't care if he thanks me or not... I just REALLY hope that this was a wake-up call for him and that he'll be more careful with this sort of stuff in the future... for both his sake and the other tenants'.

Saved him so he can do it again another day and kill himself and others next time

yeah I was too, was in a structure fire as a young adult where I got pretty severely burned and I was passed out from smoke inhalation. I was so out of it from the smoke I could barely comprehend what was happening.

Could easily be drinking too, but.

They don't learn. If they were capable of learning they wouldn't be smoking at all.

I had a tenant that wasn't supposed to smoke in the building. When I finally kicked her out I found she had been. And what's worse is there were dozens of burns on the carpet where you can tell the cigarette had fallen and just burned till it was gone. I can't imagine what the mattress looked like. Her and the rest of the tenants are probably only alive because of fire retardants materials. I doubt she ever changed or learned her lesson. They don't stop until they are dead and probably others with them.

Agreed. Best I can hope for (I guess) is that he doesn't do this again while I'm still here. :\
