• Woman I used to know and be out with socially about 15 years ago, died of suicide. Husband found her. Don't know any more details right now.
  
• Friend of mine of way, way back in high school and college died last week of lung cancer (yeah, he smoked)
• Dad found out he has adult diabetes (which I don't totally blame him because of the crappy food desert where he lives) - BUT, the doctor thinks weight loss will be the answer to him not worrying about it.
• Friends I've know for 20 years (yeah, I'm ancient), one of the truly beautiful and power couples that I know, are separated. She's now dating a guy that is almost exactly like her husband, from looks to schooling to almost the same hobbies. I thought they had everything...
• The Tribe lost this morning. Great game though.
  
• I think I am stuck in my present job. I got a new boss that I like very much but I've hit the job band ceiling (in terms of pay) and I don't think the company will come through with a higher band.

Wednesday, a guy I've known for 20+ years died. 47 years old. 100lbs overweight and a heavy smoker. Spent 2 months in the hospital in Jan for infections/wounds from his diabetes. Had a heart attack while there. They told him he needed a triple bypass...after they got the infections/wounds under control. Sent him home with a wound vac cast (?), back and forth to the hospital needing debridement....anyway, massive heart attack. Just slumped over dead. Good guy except for him being a liberal and Uni of SC fan. He will be missed.

Pall bearer in the AM for an elderly lady I know too.

Yes it is relatively new description. It is basically the idea that you live in an area where you don't have a selection or even a single source of fresh food and produce.

Where my dad lives (eastern Kentucky), Main street is like a eight mile road where there is nothing but churches and fast food restaurants. In those eight miles, there are 3(!) McDonalds. (one is in a gas station, but still.)

There is a Kroger's down the road a bit but you have to drive to it. It isn't on a city bus line either, that's blocks away from it. And that's the only grocery store within the next 10 miles. So people who live in that town only have fast food chain stores and one grocery store.

I can think of only two reasons a food desert will form in an area with enough people to justify a grocery store. Either the people in the area don't buy food from the grocery store, or there is so much shop lifting that the store can't stay in business. Can anyone think of another reason why no grocery store would want to open a store in an area with enough people to support the store?

strongly related to your point #1, could be the location is so remote that transporting food in (particularly perishable) is too expensive. but if enough people were there they'd buy it etc.

You get food deserts in cities because rents are high and grocery stores are generally low profit margin businesses that require a fair amount of space to operate.

That one grocery store doesn't carry fresh produce? Frozen vegetables? Meat, poultry, dairy? Big difference between having little choice and no choice.

I don't care where you are, if you live in a rural area, you're going to have to drive to the grocery store. Just because there are McDonalds and Burger Kings that are closer, doesn't mean you have no food choices. Very few rural areas have bus service that's worth a damn, so that's also not an excuse.

Sure, but this is a city with 30,000 with neighboring towns too. There were other stores but those went out of business because of rent and also the home office looked for places to trim.

There is no law that says a town has to have grocery stores and they are fortunate to have one, but there are other places that don't even have that. So for people who are barely making it, travel time is still time. It becomes insidiously easy to just think 'this one time, I'll just pull in to the drive through and order." Then it becomes another day, then another and pretty soon you realize that is the main consumption source of calories.
