Well, Other Than the Brits . . .

I do believe this is to be an honest, factual story

American Sickos - They're Everywhere, They're Everywhere . . .

<CLIP>

Middle-aged, white Americans are much sicker than their counterparts in England, startling new research shows,
despite U.S. health care spending per person that's more than double what Britain spends.

A higher rate of Americans tested positive for diabetes and heart disease than the British. Americans also self-reported more diabetes,
heart attacks, strokes, lung disease and cancer. The gap between the countries holds true for educated and uneducated, rich and poor.

"At every point in the social hierarchy there is more illness in the United States than in England and the differences are really dramatic,"
said study co-author Dr. Michael Marmot, an epidemiologist at University College London in England.

The study, appearing in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association, adds context to the already-known fact that the United States
spends more on health care than any other industrialized nation, yet trails in rankings of life expectancy.

The United States spends about $5,200 per person on health care while England spends about half that in adjusted dollars.

"Everybody should be discussing it: Why isn't the richest country in the world the healthiest country in the world?" Marmot said.

"It's something of a mystery," said Richard Suzman of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, which helped fund the study.

The cause for that is not the health system, but their ignorant, decadent, fat lazy asses.

Because people are electing to sit on their lazy-boys, watch TV, and down ho-hos and gallons of soda all day long?

Because more Americans eat ******, and expect pills to fix problems.

You can throw all the money you want at sick care. People won't get healthier overall. However it is far more effective and economical to maintain health and never have a problem to begin with.

Maybe on average they have better weather or maybe they have better liquer or some odd thing. How do you compare an island to the entire USA?

Also more people want to come to the USA than Great Britian. So maybe we are exposed to a wider range of disease. They dont get invaded by Mexico. France may be sneaking in through the Tube, so maybe some Muslims just ride the tunnel to the UK.

Maybe the British just have a stiff upper lip and dont report much.

I'm not sure - did you just take the side of the diseases on this?

People are obese in this nation. I know that is hard to believe with the current crop of fear mongering about people starving in the streets. But this country has a major eating disorder.

Edit: Oh, okay joke article. I guess I need a prescription drug for sarcasm.

It's not so much that I don't trust prescription drug companies, but rather I don't trust the idea of letting your body get in such bad shape that you need several drugs to fudge it to appear to be working correctly. Especially when the condition can be completely avoided simply by eating correctly.

Yep, and the consequence of the way people eat is a bunch of bodily processes not working correctly. Instead of fixing their body's, people treat the symptoms with prescription drugs.

Prescription drugs are very useful and beneficial. I use some myself. But not to the extent that I need to be told to talk to my doctor about Crestor 5 times a week.

Pisabird,
PLEASE get a passport and actually travel outside the US someday, somewhere far beyond the gated suburb you must live in, or the college you attend. Really, it would do you good.

England has some of the worst weather on the planet - there is a REASON Sherlock Holmes was always in a raincoat. The actual amount of sunlight that falls on England in a year can be measured in candlepower...without scientific notation. And as for spirits, English wine is non-existant (not enough sun for grapes), and English beer is shite (although Ireland next door is fantastic in that department). Thank god the Dutch make such good beer and are close enough for cheap importation...mmmm, Grolsch.....

Sad to say, English people are, as a whole, only slightly less obese than Americans. But they DO walk a lot more, they DO seem to use their feet a lot more, and their cars a lot less (even here in Northern England).

And they DO have the NHS, which despite it's flaws still guarantees a basic level of healthcare and ADVICE to everyone. There is also, I believe, a perception that people who overly use the NHS by insisting on being unhealthy are really being unfair to the rest of the public - after all, everyone pays into it. So there is a bit of social pressure in The UK not to look too out of shape or obese. The same applies in the US, due to hospitals writing off their bad debt, and Medicaide/Medicare, but it is less visibile and ackowledged.

It changed my life and my whole viewpoint. I went from thinking America was the center of the universe to realizing this is a very large rock we all live on with many different cultures and beliefs many much older than our own yet we are all merely people.

The ability to see things from another's point of view is a vital step to humility and humility is a vital step to wisdom and wisdom is a vital step to peace.

Of course we could just ignore our responsibility to advance humanity and 'just screw the fsckers before they decide to screw us'. It's easier, quicker, and much more profitable.

I heard that the scientist were surprised when they discovered this but I thought this was common knowledge. I really think there's gotta be something with the diet of Americans that's causing this. Too much junk food and prepackaged foods. Chemicals in those food must have some mild negative effect that builds up over time. I also think that severe obesity is some sort of actual disease akin to diabetes and is not caused by simply overeating (although that contributes to it of course). Perhaps pre-natal and early cihldhood exposure to some sort of chemical is also contributing to this problem.

I disagree. I don't think it's the chemicals - I think it's the colossal amount of junk food, which would be inedible by european standards. Just take the burger king "enormous omelet" breakfast sandwich... packing a whopping (pun not intended) 750 calories, and nearly 100% daily value of saturated fat and cholesterol... not to mention the insane 46g of total fat.

One of the authors was on NPR this morning, and theorized that it might be due to our higher levels of stress caused by longer working hours and fewer holidays. If smoking rates and weight are about the same for both groups, it makes sense.
