So, Its getting time to get the beautiful boat out again. The weather is warm, the fish are a' biting, and I just got done scrubbing the upholstery and gave her a bath. With a smile on my face I could almost hear the engine turning, and the prop spinning as I glide across the lake to my favorite hole. Ahh, summer is almost here. :D

And then it happened....

I hooked the g'damn battery cables up backwards. Oh no, not by mistake, that would at least be understandable. No, I looked at the battery, identified the posts as + and -, and said to myself, "Shit, the cables are on the opposite sides, I better turn this thing around." With a flash, and manliness in tact, I plopped down the battery, hooked up ground, started to place the hot lead on, and bam, sparks go flying and I nearly arc weld the hot lead to the post.

.....mother of God....D:

So, as I sit here and type this to you, I'm only 3/4 the man I was this morning. Long story short.

What kind of damage should I be looking for? I got the battery on (correctly) and turned the key, and only get one click.

Thoughts?

A very broken,

Gob :'(

I know nothing about boats, but if it's remotely newer, it will more than likely have some fuses somewhere that need replaced. If it doesn't...you are probably looking at a nice repair bill.

It's damn hard to say what might be fried. Basically hooking the battery up with the polarity wrong can just pop fuses, or it can fry components (including ECU modules, for example). I'd check all the fuses, and if that doesn't get you a solution you're going to need a professional.

If the battery was good unlikely it went bad. Is there still a charge? Does the click happen every time you turn the key? Are there any fuses to check?

BTW only if you had someone else hook the batty would Man Card confiscation. The fact that you tried and failed means nothing, look at All Bundy :)

Brainfarts can happen, I hope it's not too bad.

I have no boat, wasn't aware you could even do that kinda damage to one that way.

Heh, I get nervous every time I'm working on my battery banks at home, though my new setup is safer now since there's fuses and disconnect switches, so at least I don't get sparks when I put the load on. That always makes me jumpy. :awe: It's just 12 volts but a ridiculous amount of amps, you don't want to short that.

I want to convert to a -48v system eventually, that's going to be even more fun. :awe: Always triple check polarity on everything. Even more so with -48v systems because the positive is actually ground. Though depending on type of inverter I get may determine that I go +48v but -48 is more standardized for network stuff.

Well that makes me feel better. It happens, not like it's the first time I've ever changed a battery.

It does click, only once, when I turn the key. Haven't checked fuses yet.

Is the battery any good? Were you trying to start the boat out of the water? That's never a good idea.

You have a volt meter? Check the battery.
