from a friend of mine, he said he is pretty much, um, done. anyone heard or know anything about this operation and would like to comment?

Just found out someone I've known since I was kid was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer also. He found out when someone called to find out why he missed an appt. to discuss his cancer. That's how he found out.

From what I've heard, it's a pretty radical, late stage operation.
I think it removes part of the pancreas, possibly stomach and lower intestine, though I may be wrong.
The pancreas has enzymes to digest fat, so this procedure will severely inhibit his ability to digest it, if it's not already at this stage.
Randy Pausch had it done, but the cancer had already metastisized.
Steve Jobs also, but given the news, his cancer may have returned.
I hope the best for your friend's dad.

my friend just said the cancer has already spread to other region, even the Whipple operation would be insufficient. Now what's left to decide is whether to do chemo or not.

Fixed. Sorry to be a downer, but the choice seems pretty obvious to me.
