Cool, NY = easily the best state in the country, and you get to root for the Yanks! (what, me biased? 😛) Where are you moving from?

NY sucks. I was born there and I lived there until I was 23. I wouldn't go back there nor would I recommend it to anyone. Winters SUCK!!! Mosquitos SUCK!!! Humidity SUCKS!!!

The lakes are nice though and Autumn is the only time of year that I miss.

I grew up in the Albany area and lived in Rochester for a year.

Oh no way, winters own 😀 I actually wouldn't mind living farther north (I'm in Westchester) or even in another state; somewhere that gets less in the way of summer & more in the way of winter. It's July and I'm ready for winter again already 🙁

Upstate sucks. The taxes blow, gas is expensive. I moved to Syracuse 2 years ago. I'm looking for a job in the SW PA area.

The whole state is run by NYC .. and they feel it's OK to tax us out the wazoo.

Aside from that, this isn't a Right to Carry state. 1 of 2. You have to jump through all kinds of hoops and get an anal probe before they'll give you a permit to own a handgun. Stupid.

just so you know its done nothing but rain here for the past week and its gonna do it for the rest of this one, we lost power today round 10

your also gonna get a ton of snow, invest in a snowblower

BS. You realize that NYC doesn't get nearly enough back from Albany when you take into account population? Rather than complain, you should be thanking NYC for providing you with funds you would never come close to having otherwise.

Actually, IIRC, it's pretty even... NYC gets back about what it pays for, and same for the rest of NY, in terms of taxes. (NYC is not a drain on the rest of the state, nor does the rest of the state benefit from tax $$ from NYC) On the other hand, NYC has so much power in Albany that many policies are to NYC's advantage and the rest of the state's disadvantage.

Anyway, welcome to the neighborhood (geographically speaking) I'm about an hour SW of you.

Oh, and speaking of geography, stonecold: Niagara Falls, NY is no where near Plattsburgh, Watertown, etc, yet is only minutes away from the Canadian border as well. 🙂

You sound a bit jealous.

I think I'd rather move to Chernobyl and die a relatively quick death than move to Dansville where the anemic population all but guarantees some sort of incestuous relationship followed later by bouts of boredom so great, suicide sounds mighty enticing. I hope the wine is good out there b/c God knows, you sure need it to disguise your inevitable depression.

The tricky thing is that the taxes are controlled by NYC in a few ways. First of all, most of NY AREA wise is extremely poor, population wide it's one of the wealthier states.

The two biggest counties in NY state, St Lawrence (which I live in) and Franklin (right next door), are the poorest in the state, with average HOUSEHOLD incomes of $11,000 in St Lawrence and slightly lower in Franklin. My family brings in about $60k a year, and we are considered to be very wealthy.

Now, where this becomes important is that our school taxes, sales taxes, income taxes, etc are based around NYC income because of the political power that it has, which makes life really difficult for about the other half of the state. Basically, minus say NYC and Albany/Troy, NY is a LOT like Vermont as far as wealth and terrain and lifestyle. Compare our taxes to theirs, it's insane. Take that a step farther and compare that to Maine. Suddenly you see how negative an effect for the people not living in the city you get because you reside in a state with them.

As for living and working in Plattsburgh, it's a dying city, and is well on it's way out... of course, they can only blame themselves, they have the anti big business attitude like most of northern NY, which I have no issues with until they start complaining about how they have no industry. Also, there are plans of running another highway through plattsburgh to malone and potsdam and so on, although plattsburgh has an issue with this as it will "deter customers from the region"... in case they didn;t notice, i87 runs through it and goes to Sartoga/Albany/Pough/NYC...

As a fellow New Yorker I welcome you to the state! If only you moved somewhere near me (Westchester county) I'd offer ya a beer at the local pub

AHHHHH churchville! Big Italian community. pretty nice area, very quiet, but not too far away from the industrial area. 🙂

Churchville, nice community. Good luck, boring around here, conservative...Govs a clown...but I have lived all of my life here(Henrietta) so thats says something< I think. 🙂

CHeers....

Had a new home built smack in the middle of farm land. Much less hectic, which suits me fine. Safer place to ride the Hayabusa too 😀

Half hour WEST of Rochester?

My money says one of the following:
Brockport, Hilton, Hamlin, Scottsville, Caldonia, Mumford, LeRoy, Stafford or... BATAVIA!

I feel for ya man - I grew up in Batavia. Not a hell of a lot to do there. Went to college in Brockport. It's dead out there as far as jobs go, otherwise I'd still be living there. As it is, I'm leaving New York next week for good. It'll be sad, but I am most definitely looking forward to putting this nightmare of a state behind me.

Oh, btw: Welcome to the Highest Property Taxed state in the US.

Close! Churchville.

BTW, as Rip said, I am used to taxes. I would like them lower of course, but I went through my kids school and I like it. It's just money guys 😀

Hey now, that is not nearly upstate NY! Now, Plattsburgh, Massena, Potsdam, Watertown, those are upstate NY!

<---- lives a literal 5 minutes from the NY/Canadian boarder😛

I've been looking at Plattsburg. What's the employment situation like?

I believe they closed the Air Force base years ago so that drove out quite a few families and money. Other than that Plattsburg pretty much just has tourism to rely on and very little of that. It's funny, a fair number of Canadians come to NY to shop and we go up there to shop. Just for different stuff I guess.

I wouldn't move there.

How true, how true!

I spent my college years at Alfred - which was a fun time, don't get me wrong. But to live a life out there in the boonies - god bless those that can do it.

Actually most of the people I know in upstate NY (i'm from Canandaigua) would prefer if Long Island and NYC became a separate state. Most of us hate NYC.

That sure is a myopic and ignorant view to take. Be grateful for having NYC in your state. W/O NYC, what little is left of the upstate economy would collapse pretty quickly.

hey....i'm in little falls (hour or so west of albany) and i hate it!

to the bozo that said ny is the best state to live in...

8.25 tax on the dollar, state tax, tolls on the interstates, and unbearable 5 month long winters? you're nuts, man. ny sucks

give me the sunshine state all the way. no state tax, 6.5 on the dollar, and no tolls. and the job market??? forget about it!

yes if you just cut it off all at once, but if it was never there to begin with we would be just fine

Funds for what? Certainly not roads .. my Thruway tolls and gas taxes pay for those. That's the only public thing I use in this state.

I'm all for giving NYC to New Jersey.
