Well... lost my job today

Title says it all. Got laid off from the start up traffic app company where I worked as a reporter. Parent company is shutting us down because we weren't growing to profitability fast enough.

Last day is on the 29th. They've given us severance until end of November. The entire department including management got let go. Happened very suddenly. CEO walked it to the weekly meeting and told us the Board had decided to pull the plug. Even out GM was caught off guard. Huge bullshit move on their part. Lot of good people out of work.

Needless to say, I'm thoroughly bummed. Both at the corporate BS and the uncertainty ahead. Media industry is bleeding jobs again. Can I get a hug from some random people on the internet? :'(

I heard media industry pays peanuts, due to all the free bloggers,citizen journalists and photographers.

All that free work has to dampen the payscales and demand for paid reporters.

Isn't Canada in murica? oh you mean the United States? not the continent we all (Canada, USA, Mexico) reside on?

Anyway sorry OP that sucks man, I went through 4 jobs in 3 years during the dotcom bust, that was a nightmare, stay strong, be diligent about job hunting you will get back into it.
 
Ah shit, sorry, man. Job market sucks right now so good luck.

I quit voluntarily two weeks ago, but 100% my choice -- if you don't count the bullshit I put up with for years.

Dunno. Friend of mine might have a social media community manager job coming up, which was part of my role at the old gig. Fingers crossed.

you get to learn a lot and feel like you make a lot of difference in a company since its so small, but 9 out of 10 fold.

At least you got severance. Some don't even have money at the end to dole out.

Sorry to hear it, man. It ain't worth much, but if you take the opportunity to get the hell out of anything related to media and content production you'll look back on this as a good change.

Canada is in North America, but it is NOT in 'murica. Completely different places.

Heck, San Francisco isn't even in 'murica, and it's part of the United States.
