EVERYONE and their mom is raving how great fear looks and plays.

I installed the game and have MOST settings at MAX, just a few at "medium" like physics...i play in 1280x960 4xAA.

The speed is "ok" actually.....but i am FAR FROM IMPRESSED with everything in the game so far.

I am at the 3rd stage, not THAT far in the game...but i am already bored to dead.

* the GOOD thing first:

I think the only good things are the lighting/shadows...even if they can be seen as a bit "overdone". The game also loads quickly and no other problems.

BAD things:

* Physics must be TOTALLY overrated since you cant do NOTHIN' with all the useless **** which you find wandering around. Eg. you cant pick up stuff, open it, interact with it. Bullet-holes look pathetic. Everything has a feel of randomly, useless placed "pseudo" items. HL2:SOurce engine even if OLD has way better physics.

* Boring running around in that warehouse. BORING levels....in the warehouse, now somewhere in the underground where the pipes are.
JEEEZZZZ how many times did we have that already ?
Every level has that feel of emptyness, boringness to it...until you get to a fight.

* fights are already repetive, some stand-offs with the bad guys....had a bunch already.......i think the AI is not bad actually....but in general...i am not overwhelmed..also in regards to physics and effects in the fights. Don't know.

I will certainly play a bit more...but i remember already a year ago or so when i had the demo this was a game which i was looking at but literally NOTHING which struck me as that this game is a keeper.

I really dont understand why people give it such high ratings and make it basically the best game out right now.

* and those stupid "the grudge" "little ghost girl" stereotypes..... etc..etc

ADD..some more:

Because we're just at "stereotypes"...

I mean i dont have ANYTHING against a good FPS and i play HL2😀M *religiously*..even replay HL w/ the fakefactory mod and enjoy it.

But how many FPS do we get which are always like that the main character is either some MUTANT or semi-bionic robot-like "super-hero" because he got some "prototype" armor.....or belongs to some stupid extreme "special forces" unit. Sorry..alone the title and the short introductiion "first encounter assault recon against paranormal blablah" sounded REALLY pretty retarded 😉

Instead of adding some atmosphere (?) or whatever....it looks that they (developers) rather focus on more and more stupid "plots" to legitimate a FPS, or the weapons in it etc.

Well..i know..it's an FPS and certainly not an intellectual challenge which should give food for nights of interesting debate with friends regarding the twisted and hightly intelligent PLOT...its NOT....it's a d*mn FPS...but still....dumb 🙂

Give it time. I'm a HL2 fan as well, and at first I didn't like it that much, but it grows on you. Play it with the lights out and it can scare the crap out of you.

Plus it has the most intense firefights I have seen in any single player FPS to date.

Gotta say i kinda agree with the OP. Will the drab warehouse type levels ever end? I cant stand it, i want color and variety!

Seconded. I'm not really a FPS fan, but I played FEAR for a while, always in the dark, with reasonable sound, and every now and then I'd get to a stage whereby it was just too stressful, the sort of genuine panic, I just thought, I need to take a break lol.

Having said that, I never got around to finishing it/getting that far at all, so I really should get back to that at some point.

* MINOR, MINOR SPOILER ALERT, IGNORE IF YOU WANT

I was just past the bit where you meet that first group of about5 inivisible ninja blokes, after them, you meet a couple more, I was around there. I'm guessing I'm like 10% through lol? 🙁 Such a FPS n00b.

* End of spoileryness *

I as well agree with OP.
SPOILER!!!!
It does feel pretty good to shoot that (insert really bad word here) Fettel in the head near the end of the game.
/SPOILER!!!!
FEAR isn't as great as everyone says. Now, go to GameStop and buy Quake 4 😀

I agree, too. I was very, very much disappointed with FEAR. I thought it looked nice, but gameplay was BOOOOOOORING. I HATED the multiplayer feel, too. I felt like I was playing a console shooter. SUCKAGE.

like most game engines, the FEAR engine has it's strengths and weaknesses. shadows are pretty good, although a bit too dark and straight (even with soft shadows)... however, the lighting really looks good when you shoot a lamp, see it swinging in the room and causing the shadows to dance... the special effects are also very nice - cool blur effects, creepy drug-trip like cut scenes, neat looking slow mo, good particle effects, rippling glass, bump maps, etc... combined with the good sound and strong AI, battles become very intense. it's awesome to see all the debris and objects flying around, the bullet holes, the way the sound changes during "bullet time", etc. the presentation can also be genuinely creepy and in my dark basement with 5.1 surround sound, downright scary 🙂

however, the game is very repetitive and unrewarding. way too many warehouse-like buildings and sewers, ridiculously dark levels, the same battles with 4-5 soldiers over and over, the same sound effect before a scary event, and so on. the textures can be very bland (or at least look that way in the dark), the player models move somewhat ackwardly, and the environment is not particularly interactive... it's all very linear and you really lose motivation walking down the same hallway hour after hour waiting for the little girl to appear to the sound of violins shrieks. after a while, the game can really feel like a chore and the fact that it's high stress gives you less incentive to keep playing...

NOLF1 and NOLF2 were pure genius.

Agreed. Those are both really fun games, and highly underrated IMO. I actually liked FEAR, and think the engine looks awesome - I'd love to see a NOLF game (or, perhaps even better, a Shogo sequel - that game kicked major ass) using the FEAR engine.

Most FPSs suffer from single-mindedness, but this one was particularly bad in its repetitiveness. Condemned: Criminal Origins (also by Monolith) is basically FEAR with melee combat, and also the same old kill-kill-kill/dark/boo! routine and nothing else.

At least Far Cry had a nice, open environment and didn't take itself too seriously.

Maybe Hellgate London and Bioshock will be a little more interesting than your standard shooter.

The best thing about F.E.A.R. was busting around a corner and shooting my own shadow. Any one else do that?

And NOLF??? No One Lives Forever. Is this a good game, somehow I missed that one.

Welcome to... I don't know, a long ass time ago. Seriously, you missed the argument on this one. We already drew lines in the sand and bled all over each other.

btw 1280x960 is crap. Try playing it at 1280x1024

i would, if my standard reso if 1360x1024 is not available then i usuallt play games at 1280x1024

But this resolution is not available in the game !

i want source-engine with that lighting-effects. Shadow's ARE great and play with light/shadows...but the engine in general has that feel of sterileness to it...and i dont seem to be the only one bored with that warehouse/underground-pipe levels.

I mean, i ask myself about the seriousity of certain reviewers who say this game has the "best" physics around.....too bad you cant even pick-up and throw items...just for the fun of it.

The firefights ARE good, i agree, but still a LONG way to go to make it a good game in general. But as it looks right now the firefights are basically always the same...and i am also not impressed by the "capabilities" of my guy..eg. melee, punching/kicking....he looks like some handicapped guy who ***** in his pants doing some awkwards movements in an attempt to "fight" or something 🙂

Edit the config file, I had to to get 1280x1024.

I lost motivation with FEAR, it was high stress, and a bit repetitive. I'd quite like to finish it for the story though. D'ah well.

It was fun but I have to admit the gameplay turned pretty boring. The bullet and the pure butchery of the atmosphere when you riddle it with bullets was cool for awhile. But like so many other FPS they simply do not know how to interact the gameplay with the killing and AI. First person shooters is all about the kills because it's the only thing that is guaranteed to repeat throughout the entire game. So if the killing becomes tiresome, boring, or even a secondary objective then the game simply losses focus and becomes boring no matter how much graphics or story you throw into it.

If you want to compare it too HL2 Ep 1, at least I played through HL ep 1. I actually never finished FEAR. Far Cry on the other hand actually had depth and added a sense of strategy to tracking and killing the AI (until they added the DNA freakazoids in the middle).

I'm not a big FPS fan but to tell you the truth I actually enjoyed Hitman Blood Contracts more than FEAR and HL2 combined. Why? Because Hitman focussed on the killing!!!!

I have no idea why people put HL2 up on some imaginary pedestal to compare it to everything out today and quite frankly it annoys the hell out of me how people try to compare FPSs on different playing fields. If you asked me to recommend either FEAR or HL2 I would have a hell of a time deciding. Because I could easily see why one would like the other more so based on their pallet.

it's probably a matter of personal preference. But HL2 source engine is old, but nevertheless solid and runs fast even on mediocre machines.
Physics are good (tho not "great" maybe 🙂 ..interaction with objects...gravity-gun etc.

HL2 story was awesome in my opinion and i dint even see EP1 yet...changing maps/environment....just as an example from the depths in the "pipe" level...then, say, the early level with the helictopter chase and the boat. HL2 NEVER got dull..instead it got better and better the longer you were in the game...with great stuff like that robot-dog there...nice story...VERY good atmosphere for what the "message was".....or...remmember the street-fight against the spiders/walkers with the RPG....etc..etc..

I stil play Hl2😀M and i am amazed at some of the custom-maps, some just look INCREDIBLE good and still play nicely....eg. some outdoor maps.

From what i've seen in FEAR i actually dont exxpect any more... for some reason i "frear" that whole game is just in that warehouse/underground which is basically barren walls and flickering lights (why alwways those stupid flickering lights ?) with shelves and randomly and senseless placed boxes and items which are "just there" to make the levels look a BIT more interesting.

I like that FEAR, compared to Doom3 (or Q4, which i didnt play yet) is "bright" and colorful and nice lighting....but they could've made that FAR better, like a "new generation" half-life 2 with a better engine (source engine lacks lighting and shadows)....but instead they just ripped some things off HL2, BADLY, left out the good things like physics....and the story is just VERY MUCH like "D3" with *CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP* horror-effects. It's like a mix of D3/Hl2 but it really didnt work out as good as it sounds "in theory". IMHO.

And,....you say FPS is primarly about the kills...i agree....but then Hl2 actually HAD a story and i think they did a very good job w/ implementing that feel/atmosphere of fighting some fascist/communist regime as a rebel/dissident....i mean it had SOME plot which made it good.

But then..as said..personal preference.

D3 was a mighty disappointment. I defend it as much as possible but in all truth it could of been a lot better of a game in the hands of a different developer.

I recommend you playing Quake 4 and you'll see what I mean. Still a little too on the dark side though. Lighting effects in dark areas is not much of a technical feet IMO. Though I wish they start learning how to use it in twilight levels. Doom 3 was the first to use pitch black levels so I will give it an "artistic license". Though FEAR and Q4 came along and pretty much did the same thing. Why must every other level be themed black and not just simply have every other room dark like Far Cry had? It's completely unrealistic with or without the flash light. I literally was relived to see an exit in a room just to hope for a lighted area but again I was disappointed. Apparently not even a storage closet comes with a light fixture.

When it comes to a point where you can't see even walls - you went from lighting effects to down right aweful game development.

i enjoy D3 once in a while for..uhm...well being D3 🙂 Nice, simple, retarded FPS.

But no desire to get Q4 since it looks totally the same...and D3 is enough for that kind if i am in a D3 mood 🙂

It's a great game... I don't see what your beef with it is. The multiplayer gets ultra hectic if you play in a high population server, and the dedicated servers that people set up rawk. The single player is pretty dull; there's not enough creepy stuff, and the environments get repetitive. FEAR isn't meant to be a fantasy like Oblivion, which also has amazing graphics, it's meant to put you in the game. It does a damn good job if you ask me.

The way I see it, as far as contemporary single player FPS go:

Half Life 2 >> F.E.A.R >>>> Far Cry >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>&gt
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>&gt
>>>>>>>>>>>Doom 3

😀
