Well, it's over

I don't know quite what to say - I am still in shock a bit - my mother, who is the sole supporting parent in our family, just lost her fulltime quality assurance position. I'm not going to go into the details, but this is a real blow for our family. It is such a horribly difficult sector to be in, but it is where all of her experience lies, so there is little else.

Damnit damnit damnit

That sucks. Hopefully she finds another one quickly.

How old are you? You could get a job to help the family out.

sad to hear but there is always a light in the end of the tunnel you know...just go for it..although things like that sucks.

I'm 20 - currently working 2 jobs. I'm going back to University in September, considering staying back to help if things do not improve. I dunno, we'll see I guess, thanks for the kind words.

Sabot, it may be time for you to step up and help out the family. Things will work out, have faith in each other and be supportive.

ive personally been in your situation on several occasions (my father losing his job or quitting). initially its very tough, but its all worked out in the end. he's a stronger man b/c of all of this and is an example of a great success story now....

Yes, this is the 3rd time this has happened to us in the past 5 years or so. She is older now though, 52, and it's such a terrible strain.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts, they are appreciated.

Have her check out Abbott Labs. They have a big QA dept. You have to start as a temp, but if she's a good worker, temps always get offered permanent jobs with awesome benefits.

Good luck, I hope your mom finds employment soon.

It's not over. Sorry to hear that she lost her job, but don't think of it as all over. It was only a job, you still have each other afterall. Did they give her advanced notice? Severance package? Are you guys planning to stay in the area or move?

Unemployment insurance, then welfare.
She will find another job before step two happens.

Yeah, if shes had enough experience in the field i'm sure she'll be able to find another job. And switching fields isn't out of the question.

I don't know how plausable a field change would be for her, it's such a stupid field to be in the first place, I wish she had chosen something else origionally. Everything is so much easier in retrospect though. Moving is very out of the question, we would never be able to afford it.

We're in Ottawa, Canada, so I'm not sure how the IT market is doing right now at this location. Time will tell I suppose, I'm really considering staying home from school in Toronto though, I hope it doesn't come to that however.

How old is she? Around 40-50. I would say if she has the energy she can try going into real estate. I hear you dont need too much training to get started.

And stay in school, dropping out might seem better now, but staying in school will be more advantageous for you and your family in the future. Since your mom doesn't have a job, you should be able to get more grants from whatever school you're at. Go to the financial office and see.

Yah she's 52, I'll mention it to her, thanks. And yes, I am going to see what Financial Aid will do. I have school covered for the next year, and a good chunk of it covered for my 3rd year. It's about 15 grand a year in all.
