I was so excited, I put it all together, I know i shouldve tested the psu, but I was too excited I guess. anyway, this is a Corsair ax850. So everything is in, everything is correct, nothing is lose, I checked everything, I plug it in, then flip the switch, within half a second the power supply makes a loud POW, one of its capacitors must have blown right up, and then sparks everywhere, I want to think all my components are ok, there were SOME sparks in the case, I had the side off to watch and see it boot up. the sparks didnt hit the mobo, as far as I know. but tons of them flew out the back. No way im plugging this back in or trying it again, but im pretty sure its shot, chances are id plug it back in, it would catch on fire. So I can RMA this, I guess I got a faulty one that decided to explode in my face. However a point out to you guys, every part here is compatible, I did alot of research, everything is compatible.
So ive never RMA'd to newegg before, do they just give you a replacement or a bunch of different choices for a different one. im just disappointed. it better not have hit my motherboard though. Ive also heard PSU's can make white smoke on a huge failure or explosion like that, mine did NOT have any smoke, just a loud pop and tons of sparks. then nothing. There was no boot up. no sign of power to anything, no motherboard led's, nothing. I can tell you though that im thinking it was some sort of voltage regulator or whatever they are, because I didnt even send any power to the motherboard, I didnt even press a button to turn it on,I just flipped the switch to get power to the PSU and pow.

RMA with newegg is for an exchange of the same item, same as with anywhere else.

Sorry that you got a dud unit 🙁

By the way, how do you know your CPU runs at 4.5 if you've never even had it powered on yet? 😕

like I said, these are going to be the confirmed things, Im going to OC it to 4.5 later on, when I actually get it. Im thinking 4.3 though. well see. Im just going to be really mad if the next one I get, and one of the loud whiney coil ones, look it up on youtube, tons of videos of the AX850 doing it. Want to know something funny? Is newegg aftermarket or new or what? I did some investigating, turns out the board in the inside is chewed up in some spots. pretty sure thats what triggered the pow and sparks. also, do you know how fast RMA'S are? I mean days, both shipping to and from.

Newegg sells new items mostly. They do have an open box section but separate from the new items.

In my experience RMA time is pretty quick. Normal shipping time from them back to you, usually 1 day processing (though I had 2 days once because of stock issues). How fast it gets from you to them, well, that depends on how you ship it.

ok so, what do I have to include in the RMA? Can they just ONLY send me a PSU? I have all these cords clipped in, tied in, everything, I spent alot of time on cable management, so since this is fully modular id like to just be sent a psu, no cords or anything else, are you allowed to do this? or do I have to somehow get the cords out and return them too and then eventually do the same with the new cords?

Might want to go directly through Corsair if you want to only send the unit itself back. Newegg doesn't open another box to send you just the unit, they send you a whole new sealed box so they expect the entire thing sent back to them (cables and everything). Since you spent the time getting it all nice and neat it may be better to go through Corsair directly. I've not had to RMA anything with them yet but I hear their RMA process is pretty painless.

Just a heads up. Never do final cable tie ups until you know your system is running. This way you don't waste your time if you run into trouble. Good luck with your build.

That sucks. Personally, I'd contact Corsair and send back EVERYTHING, just in case there's a problem with one or more of the cables as well.
I know their customer service is closed for the holiday week, but I think their tech support folks are working on a limited basis.

IMO, their tech support/RMA handling is top notch.

Yeah, I heard its one of the best, which is great because PSU's are the most likely to fail.

I've NEVER had a quality PSU fail before. Cheap junk-built ones...you betcha. That's how I learned that there are good ones and junk ones...and what the potential cost of buying cheap can be.

well for one, this was a 180$ PSU, was not cheap compared to alot of psu's. 🙂 also, is there any way I could check if the cables shorted too? Im not sure if I sound like a retard there but id like to get this all over with now so I can FINALLY use this thing, I got the parts as a present, im really excited to use it. Because some guy who works at corsair said we will only take the psu but you can send us the cables if they got shorted.

Give them a good visual inspection, look at anyplace the cables touched the metal of the case.
Otherwise, just RMA the PSU back to Newegg and return everything with it.

If Corsair only wants back the power supply unit...RMA with Newegg.

RMA with corsair. That way they will be responsible to replace anything in your system that was taken by the PSU. They have a good reputation to compensate for damages. If you RMA the bad unit to Newegg it would be tough to prove your case. Talk to RAMGUY over at the Corsair forum.

good point.

These cables are heavily sleeved, like seriously, 3 layers, thats why they are so stiff. :sneaky: Anyway im pretty sure that would have protected them.

Probably...but that doesn't eliminate the possibility of manufacturing defects...shit happens...even with the best of companies.

Well, I recently already brought it to ups, they are shipping it back now, hopes in not getting another one that will explode in my face, also hopes in not getting one that has that annoying squeal
