bullsh*t.. the digital connection is basically good for nothing. Basically your moving audio decode from the soundcards dac to the speakers dac. The only benifit is possibly cutting down on noise if you have a very noisy sound system. Problem is that adding a dac the speakers adds to costs, less resources for speaker material. It also is redundant as you already have a perfectly good dac in your computer. Think about it, home theater and home stereo equip doesnt shove dacs into their speakers and they are just fine. Its mostly a marketing thing, slapping digital on anything makes it catchier.
as for dvd, the dac has nothing to do with it. I guess some people are mixing digital up with dolby digital decoding, which only comes with certain speakers like the cambridge dtt3500. The promedias will whoop the ba's playing dvds, there is no comparison. ba's subwoofer cannot match the promedia 160watt 2 6.5" subwoofer. The ba's have no tweeter, so their highs are less crisp, no getting around it.
as for people judging speakers based on listening tests at stores... gah. That only works for normal stereo/home theater equipement where they are setup in soundrooms. Enviroment does affect sound quality..quality/tone of sound if u want

generally comp speakers on shelves are badly setup, abused, and totally make for poor comparison testers.
Generally its best to buy a good set of speakers and stick with them a couple years, so think of it as an investment.
