Well, it's between the Klipsch Promedia 4.1 and the Boston BA4800 [BOSTON WINS...here's why]

I've decided to just go with a set of nice computer speakers for my room instead of the Reciever/Bookshelf speaker route.

I have wonderful things about both the Klipsch and the Bostons, so let me have it. Which one should I get? I understand there is a price difference to think about along with the sound quality.

No brainer here. Buy 3 BA 4800 for the price of one 4.1. Hook all 3 up in parallel!

This subject has been dealt with many times, do a search. Get them both and you'll have 8.2 surround. :)

I prefer the quality of the BA4800, but they can't fill a room as well.
If you have a bigger room, or want more than one person to be able to listen at once the Klipsch are probalby a better choice.

I'm not sure if you can do this, but you might want to consider....

Buy the BA4800s for under $100 @ Best Buy and test them out...you should be able to return them within X amount of days with no restocking fee if you decide they aren't for you...then you can buy the 4.1s or 2.1s or whatever you want.

I agree with the fact that the sound reproduction from speakers is, largely, a matter of opinion and taste.

I think it all boils down to what type of music you listen to and if you can stand the horn tweeters or not. The klipsch's are more comfortable with metal etc. than they are with let's say the classical track. I myself listen mainly to trance and went the promedia route. Never looked back since. If money is a concern pick up the bostons. In addition, if you play a lot of games the pro's may be the better choice as the sub can thump harder and louder. Not saying that the bostons are bad, they are excellent speakers. Whichever you choose you will be getting excellent audio reproduction. It's just a matter of choosing which one fits your needs the best.

I grappled with the same decision...I spent like 2 hours at CompUSA listening to both. I think the sales guy was getting pissed but I didn't care. 250 bones is a lot for speakers that I'd only use in my room. The BA4800's sounded almost as good (bass wasn't quite as booming but thats ok cuz I have 5 roommates who like to sleep). And they were a full $100 less. Now they're $200 less than the new PM 4.1's. My advice? If you're going 4.1...go with the BA4800's...if you want to step up to the 5.1...go with the Klipsch. In my opinion $300 for computer speakers that don't have any kind of digital connection for watching DVDs is not worth it.

The other option is to check out the Altec Lansing 4.1's with Dolby Digital. They are really nice and are like $30 cheaper than the Klipsch.

Well, after lots of hard decision making...I've decided to go with the BOSTONS.

1) Cost, even though I have the option to spend for the Klipsch, I can get myself another 60 gig HD for the price difference.
2) I'll be staying in a dorm room next year, and even though I love big power and big bass (I have 1200 watts (real watts, no pyrimid stuff, running to a pair of 12" woofers) and too much power and bass will get me kicked out.

Thanks everyone, for your input. NOW, time to find a deal. Last I heard was BestBuy.com?

Thanks again.

Yeah, I been trying to get on bb.com for a couple days now to check out the set.

OH, PS: another reason why I like the Bostons for my particular situation. I can't put holes in the walls, so the speakers stands will be nice.

PLEASE EXPLAIN TO DIGITAL AUDIO, ESP. WHAT IT HAS TO DO W/ BOSTONS.

i beg to differ. The klipsch's were powerhouses, but i never used that power. And I moved from gaming to listening to music/dvd's and the bass just got too boomy for me. I ended up selling them (tho, the other reason of that was i needed cash :)). So now i'm left w/ some cheapo midilands, they're ok, but I will prolly get a set of BA4800's.

And the whole dorm issue too... 3 dorms would be blasting music and it wouldn't make a difference.. just annoying..

It all really depends on your tastes too. I mean, the BA4800's are no where near "you'll be sorry" if he can save $150 and buy something else more worthwhile.

I owned the Klipsch Pro-Media V2-400s (not the 4.1s) and got rid of them for the BA4800s. Good decision! The 4.1s are an improvement, but with the BA4800s costing $100, the 4.1s can't justify the $200 difference in price.

the digital connection is basically for Dolby Digital when viewing DVDs.
You really don't need it for gaming. Some people say it produces a cleaner sound but I've never a difference. And these days there's software DVD players (windvd and powerDVD) that have dolby digital/dts decoders built into them. Good decision, you won't regret your BA4800s.

EXACTLY what I was expecting...*sigh*

<< Bestbuy.com. Their site is kinda down now though. >>

Best Buy is no longer taking orders for the BA4800's on their web site. Why are these speakers so hard to order? Cheapest place I can find them now is amazon.com for $130.

Are there any other deals floating around for these things? I finally pretty much decided on these things and there isn't a deal to be found.

How close are the 790's to the 4800's? I don't need to play them really loud. I'm just wondering if the sound quality is similar.

Thanks,

Sal

bullsh*t.. the digital connection is basically good for nothing. Basically your moving audio decode from the soundcards dac to the speakers dac. The only benifit is possibly cutting down on noise if you have a very noisy sound system. Problem is that adding a dac the speakers adds to costs, less resources for speaker material. It also is redundant as you already have a perfectly good dac in your computer. Think about it, home theater and home stereo equip doesnt shove dacs into their speakers and they are just fine. Its mostly a marketing thing, slapping digital on anything makes it catchier.

as for dvd, the dac has nothing to do with it. I guess some people are mixing digital up with dolby digital decoding, which only comes with certain speakers like the cambridge dtt3500. The promedias will whoop the ba's playing dvds, there is no comparison. ba's subwoofer cannot match the promedia 160watt 2 6.5" subwoofer. The ba's have no tweeter, so their highs are less crisp, no getting around it.

as for people judging speakers based on listening tests at stores... gah. That only works for normal stereo/home theater equipement where they are setup in soundrooms. Enviroment does affect sound quality..quality/tone of sound if u want:p generally comp speakers on shelves are badly setup, abused, and totally make for poor comparison testers.

Generally its best to buy a good set of speakers and stick with them a couple years, so think of it as an investment.

Well...I guess it's pretty much up to the deal to settle it then. I don't mind spending the money, but I want to make sure it's what I want. I'm sure I'll be totally happy with whichever set I get. So, FIND ME A DEAL (on either setup)
