Well, I'm seriously thinking about Lasik.

I want to get Lasik done before I head off to travel. I figure that I'll have some serious issues if something happens to my glasses or contacts while I'm in a foreign country, plus I've wanted my natural eyesight back for a long time, being a photographer and all.

Can anyone who had it post the following:

1. When did you have it done?

2. What specific technology did you use? Wavefront, etc.

3. What surgeon did you have and location?

4. How did you go about finding this surgeon?

5. What was the price?

6. What was your eyesight like before? Power, heavy astigmatism, etc?

7. What was your eyesight like after?

8. What were ALL the cons?

9. How long have/did these cons lasted/last?

10. Are you happy with the result?

11. Anything else?

1. When did you have it done? 2004

2. What specific technology did you use? Wavefront, etc. ummm. Lasik. I dont remember.

3. What surgeon did you have and location? Don't remember, St. Louis Area. Lasik Vision Institute.

4. How did you go about finding this surgeon? Heard ad on radio when I ws considering the surgery

5. What was the price? $1,600

6. What was your eyesight like before? Power, heavy astigmatism, etc? Pretty bad, couldn't really function without glasses.

7. What was your eyesight like after? Almost perfect

8. What were ALL the cons? Slight halo at night on lights

9. How long have/did these cons lasted/last? Still there, buttttt... ive realized the halos help me with depth perception at night

10. Are you happy with the result? Yep

11. Anything else?[/quote] Overall I'm happy. It's not perfect for me though, but I hardly need glasses or anything. Vision has probably degraded 5% since I've had it. They told me it would though.

I don't think you should leave so soon after getting it. You may have issues anytime within the 6 month (?) stabilization period.

Can anyone who had it post the following:

1. When did you have it done?

November '05

2. What specific technology did you use? Wavefront, etc.

Wavefront

3. What surgeon did you have and location?

The surgeon's name was Dr. Robin in Lake Mary, Fl.

4. How did you go about finding this surgeon?

Same place that did Tiger Wood's LASIK. If it was good enough for Tiger it was good enough for my wife and I.

5. What was the price?

$3700 for each of us.

6. What was your eyesight like before? Power, heavy astigmatism, etc?

I had astigmatism with slight myopia. My wife was really bad though. Nearly legally blind.

7. What was your eyesight like after?

The next day I was 20/15, iirc, in both eyes

8. What were ALL the cons?

The only cons I encountered were that my close-up vision was not as good as before. Of course, being myopic to begin with I had great close-up vision previously. It took about a month for my eyes to adjust to reading text in a newspaper or on a computer screen without difficulty. I also have difficulty reading small text in low-light situations. Menus in some restaurants can be a pain.

My wife had a problem with dry eyes for about 6 months. She still uses eye drops on occassion, like when it gets cold and the heater kicks in.

9. How long have/did these cons lasted/last?

see above

10. Are you happy with the result?

Absolutely. Despite the few cons it's great not having to wear glasses anymore.

11. Anything else?

Best money I ever paid a doctor. I'd do it again in a second.

If I was a candidate (and I don't know for sure that I am or not) I would take it. From what I've read it isn't as perfect as some claims have made, yet for me it is better to be closer to perfect vision then further from it. I have an eye doctor appointment coming up and I am going to ask if they can check my if a am a candidate.

If I could wear contacts, I wouldn't consider it, unfortunately I am forced to wear hard contacts (too uncomfortable for me). Surgery is permanent is relatively permanent, you should consider that in your choice to get lasik.

TechBoyJK, I already see halos with my current glasses, I doubt lasik will be much worse 😀.

1. When did you have it done?
July 07

2. What specific technology did you use? Wavefront, etc.
Intralase+Wavefront

3. What surgeon did you have and location?
Dr. Tayfour, Windsor, ON

4. How did you go about finding this surgeon?
Not sure

5. What was the price?
3600

6. What was your eyesight like before? Power, heavy astigmatism, etc?
-3 in both eyes

7. What was your eyesight like after?
After the first time, not so great, I had serious ghosting issues. After the 2nd time my right eye is good but still have some ghosting issues in my left eye. However I techincally have 20/20 or better in both eyes.

8. What were ALL the cons?
Having to have it done twice, probably will need to have it done a 3rd time in left eye at some point.

9. How long have/did these cons lasted/last?
Still have some ghosting issues, eyes seem to "get tired" by the end of the day, I don't recall having this issue before.
Have to use eye drops for about 6 months.

10. Are you happy with the result?
If I had to do it again I probably wouldn't but I am mostly satisfied.

11. Anything else?
If you are expecting to function w/o glasses/contacts then it is a good idea, if you are expecting perfection don't do it.

What happens if your vision changes a few years after you get lasik done? Can you do it again? That's what i'm worried about. I want to have it done, but i'm only 24, and I don't want to screw myself over later in life if I can never have it done again.

Just the photo on the front page is enough to dissuade me.

My buddy did it, and wishes he never even thought of it. He's one that needs RGB contacts for the rest of his life. Another person I know through work has bad BAD ghosting.

I won't putz with my vision.

I'll answer you with the best answer and one of the questions you may not have considered. You are too young to get LASIK. It is highly recommended to wait until you are at least 25 as your eyesight and form of your eye can still change when you are under that age. You will have severe difficulty getting a surgeon to operate on you if you are below that age, never mind if you are a suitable candidate.

I had it done at 26. Best decisision in my life and 20/15 in both eyes.

Either Chicken got ripped off or Techboy got lucky the Dr. didn't laser his eye in half

jeebus.

i havent had it, but my brother in law did. he was an AH-64 mechanic when he enlisted years ago...always wanted to be a pilot, and when he found out the Army would pay for Lasik, he had it done ASAP.

Ive never heard him complain, but his vision is good enough that he is an AH 64 *pilot* now and i know sure as hell he isnt sorry he had the surgery. sorry i dont really have any details.

lol

When you plan on having a portion of your eyeballs vaporized by a laser it's probably not the best time to be bargain hunting.

NOOOOO DONT DO IT!!!!!!!

I've been 98% blinded in one eye since Lasik. After a week following surgery my eye exploded inside and blood covered the entire insides.

NEver AGAIN!!!

j/k - I've wondered about lasik too.

Go and get yourself an evaluation. Options may vary based on your condition/situation. If your vision is still changing, it's better to wait til it stabilizes.

In a couple of months? What happened to the west coast? Getting a job? How do you plan to pay for this and then travel in Europe?

Is it true that when you get older after the Lasik procedure your eyes become far sighted and you have trouble even reading without glasses?

Is it true that when you get older after the Lasik procedure your eyes become far sighted and you have trouble even reading without glasses?

It's true with or without Lasik.

They just warn about it when people get it so they don't scream for a refund or something like that due to the natural progression of age taking hold.

1. When did you have it done?
2007
2. What specific technology did you use? Wavefront, etc.
PRK w/ super duper 3D tracking technology
3. What surgeon did you have and location?
Royo Laser Eye in Roseville, CA
4. How did you go about finding this surgeon?
Referral - Friends/Family discount
5. What was the price?
$2500/eye less $1500 for discount = $1000/eye
6. What was your eyesight like before? Power, heavy astigmatism, etc?
20/300
7. What was your eyesight like after?
20/20 right, 20/30 left
8. What were ALL the cons?
halo around lights when I'm tired at night
9. How long have/did these cons lasted/last?
shortly afterwards. It's not an issue for me
10. Are you happy with the result?
yes
11. Anything else?
Go for it! PRK takes longer to recover, but there's no flap to cut.

Don't do it! Dry eyes, haloes, etc. are all normal side effects of LASIK, and as long as you come out with around 20/20 vision, you are considered a success, despite the negative results of the surgery.

Biggest mistake I've ever made in my life. Hands down.
