Because keep in mind they were made 30 years ago. Back then everyone was teh suk at acting compared to now...

The Godfather (1972) immediately refutes your argument. Apocalypse Now does a good job too.

I liked the original trilogy, but I liked the new one too 😱
The directing is not the best out there (some even think it's trash), but the story is really good IMHO

I'd love to see people who say it's trash directing get their flacid ass out there and give it a go.

Am I missing something as to why it became so popular?

About 25 years.
So true..

So explain why geeks today love it so much, since most weren't even born by the time the third came out.
Because they grew up with the toys!!!!😀

I had an R2D2 sotrage thing that I used to keep all of my transformers in 😱

I'm convinced that anyone whose only exposure to the original trilogy is 20-25 years after the fact via 6 hrs straight on DVD will never really get what the fuss was about. Maybe part of it is it's hard to impress in the whole "keep me entertained and occupied 24/7 with electronic sh!te" culture, which was non-existent back then. Those movies were a big deal, they came along and stunned people. 30 years later, it's easy to take for granted lightsabers and blasters and droids and wookies and stormtroopers and spaceships and hyperspeed and Darth Vader, but the degree to which that world was constructed and then executed on film was like nothing you'd ever seen in 1977.

The acting was not that bad to me, it's some of the dialogue that's weak. But the plot was entertaining and had enough twists, the gadgetry and technology was cool, and the characters were larger than life. That captured the imagination of millions of people and is what propelled those movies into being a huge chunk of a lot of childhoods. It was massively appealing to kids without pandering to them like Lucas did later. In licensing eleventy billion products, it just fed the phenomenon and helped keep fan interest extremely high in between movies. It was pretty much unbearable waiting the 3 years for the next one.

And he doesn't need any more encouragement to go stain his old movies with a bunch of digital bullsh!t. It doesn't add anything. The amount of crapola he was able to cram into some of the battle scenes in the second trilogy is more than any human can process at one time, I couldn't care less about how much digital wanking his computer guys can do.

Being old enough to have actual seen the original at the theater🙁

The special effects and cinematography where so far ahead of anything previously done that people really didn't pay much attention to the cheesey plot or the so so acting. And it was the first mega marketed movie that recieved global press coverage and came complete with its own line of action figures and toys. It truly changed the way movies where marketed and distributed.

O Rly? :Q

You gotta think though. Most of us either saw them when we were kids back in the 70's, or when they did the Re-release of them in the 90's.

Luke we're gunna have company!

Never tell me the odds!

I'm not sure what to think of it. It was entertaining, but the acting was bad, really really bad. The entire plot was pretty corny and nearly unbelievable. The special effects I saw were good, but I could see a lot of touch ups and edits with today's technology.

Go watch "Corvette Summer." That's the movie that Mark Hammill made in 1978 between Episode 4 and Episode 5 of Star Wars. Give you an idea of the bubblegum mentality of movies of that era... poor scripts, poor acting, etc.

Since Hammill starred in both movies, maybe you want another example. Try stomaching the original "Grease" with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Scary

With those as a basis of comparison, perhaps you'll understand why Star Wars is revered.

Those are all movies designed to appeal to children and teens, movies for that audience aren't any better now. There were plenty of great movies made in that era.
a few examples..

The Godfather
Apocolypse Now
MASH
The Sting
The French Connection

meh, i watched 4 outa 5 of those, only liked the godfather.

he shoulda said sci fi sucked then. and it did.

Star Wars is an epic in the true sense of the word. It was one of the first "space" movies to take itself seriously (ie, not be a "live action cartoon." It had humor and cheesey lines, but you also got a sense that this was serious business... that the fate of the galaxy really did depend on the actions of Luke, Han etc.

Even today, few movies are so epic. Most movies are about some asshole robbing a bank or blowing up a hotel.. or they are basically action-comedies like James Bond.

Few movies have the magic mix of epic seriousness and simple "fun" that the first three Star Wars movies had.

because most of the fans saw it when they were 5-15 years old (both in theater and on video). You care more about SFX than good acting at that age.

Please...there have been horrible movies made in every generation (in fact, I'd say the current crop is particularly weak in comparison in acting and script). Fact is there were some damned fine movies made during the 1970s and 80s.

There are 2 great movies from that time period on Turner Classic Movies tonight.

Right now.. Coal Miner's Daughter. Amazing performances by all actors, especially Beverly DeAngelo as Patsy Cline.

Then.. NASHVILLE.. an absolute classic, and probably not what you expect..

well put. the Matrix and LOTR tried but imo they both had an awesome first movie then kinda lost it. Star Wars captures your heart like a true epic.
