Well... I.T. - it's been real

After 500 job applications - I quit counting.

I guess for me... this field is dead. I took a job as a car salesman today. 🙁

I guess it's time to make "lemonade" - because at least the auto sector is hot as long as the interest rates and incentives remain as they are.

There's guys there making $10K a month... and some making 3.

I guess it beats nothing - but I'm definitely ambivalent about it.

Sorry to hear about the bad luck with IT. Hope it works out being a car salesman. Does that mean you have to buy a funky suit and wear shiny white shoes? LOL Just kidding. At least you will have some income until an IT job finds you.

where are you located? the company I work for is steadily expanding, the pay kinda sucks, but they have pretty good medical benifits. it's not a normal IT job we mostly do a lot of travel in local regions doing field repairs on all sorts of equipment.

here's thier main page

lobadobadingdong (dasm.. what a MOUTHFUL!) :Q

I'm in the Seattle area... along with about 30,000 other unemployed IT people.
On the bright side - the dealership has Internet sales as well... and the manager mentioned they might need some computer help. Maybe all is not lost. 😱

Hey...car sales isn't that bad...provided they have a good commission schedule. I did it for several weeks after 6 mos. of looking for a job in IT and then finally did find one (at a salary I had back in '96).

What kind of dealership?

Oh well ,at least you've got a job now Dan🙂 ,I hope it works out for you ,& like you say ,you might get a little IT work there too😉....................... hey ,you never know they might allow you to assimilate them!😀

Re computers in cars (as far as European cars go anyway) you can't just plug in any ole laptop🙁

Tis a stepping stone my good friend! 🙂

(Now sell as many of those DASM things as you can so my company can start matching my 401k again! 😉 )

(P.S. Don't ask me to buy one either...I bought 2 (Durango and Intrepid) in a 9 day period about 3.5 months ago! :Q)

I have had a lot of friends do what you are doing now Dan and many of them are starting to make their way back into the IT sector as positions open up. Some, particularly the ones who did new home sales have decided to stay in that field as they are making way more money than they ever made in IT.

Dasm Dan, I feel your pain. 🙁

But hey, to me, A job, is better than NO job. And the earnings potential is good! 🙂 With your gift of leadership and pursuasion, I'm sure you will do well! 🙂

I was lucky to get a job in IT (not project management), started Thursday, but I had to take a 60% paycut from what I was making before, and it was the only job offer I'd had in 9 months. 🙁🙁

One nice thing, it's pretty much a 40 hour work week, no cell, no pager, less stress. So I will have time to pursue some certifications, maybe a degree, do some PC consulting, etc., hoping that by next year the economy picks up around here enough to pick up a better paying job.

Thanks guys. 🙂

I guess it's NOT so bad... It's a Chevy dealer - which means... Corvettes! 🙂 😉

They do have some fairly nice PC action, and an ok website. They do some internet sales.
I think I might be able to spruce up the site a bit -

As a stats freak, I'd want to be at the top of the "leader board" each month. That would mean a pretty tasty income. The guy up there now made $12K last MONTH.

Funny thing - the General Sales Manager lived two doors down from me for a year and a half - and we never met until yesterday. That may seem unremarkable until you consider that there are only 6 houses in my neighborhood. 😱 We had a pretty good laugh over that one.

There are lot of ways to that "pot of gold", so give it your best. I'm betting on you. 😉

Internet sales. Chevy dealer. And I'm looking for a new truck in Dec. Maybe the Chevy SSR

hmmm. My first customer.
While I'm not even on the payroll yet... I'm certain we can help you get exactly what you're after.

There could be a niche for you.... Do you get money if we buy online and say that YOU were our contact person? Hmm.....

Kinda offtopic but why do americans buy huge trucks like H2 or something? Im sure 99% doesnt "need" them..The good things about europeans is that they appriciate the nature. Maybe its the same with sportscars (which I do understand why people buy them). For a change Im writing everything that comes in mind.

Really, this should go in a different forum, but the people I take issue with are those that say that all SUVs (and all SUV owners) are ignorant, careless about the environment, etc. Yes, some people do buy them for a status symbol, when in reality another (possibly more efficient) vehicle would be better, but there are people that are best served by an SUV (like my aunt, who has a commercial printing business and needs to haul stuff, but also needs a vehicle that can be convenient to transport people in).

IMHO, the "What Would Jesus Drive" ad campaign was / is (is it still going on?) the epitome of stupidity. Anyone who knows the slightest bit about the Bible knows that he would have needed a gas-guzzling 15 passenger commercial van to carry his disciples around.

Hi Dan,

Everybody already said so many great things. Glad you are working and who knows, maybe in no time you may not miss the IT Industry anyway by being at the top of that Leaderboard 😉

What Would Jesus Drive? Jesus is the miracle man and he doesn't need a large vehicle to haul everyone around. In John 12:49 NIV Jesus says, "For I did not speak of my own Accord...".😀

[EDIT] BTW Congrats Dan on the new job and good luck climbing that leaderboard.

Well, sorry to hear that you couldn't manage to find another job in IT, Dan. It's been tough everywhere, and I'm already worried about 4 years from now when I graduate.:Q As for you however, have fun in your car salesman job; you'll have that top spot in no time, that's just the kind of person you are.😉

I'm glad to hear that you've found a job! 🙂

Something is better than nothing. I'm starting to wonder if majoring in computer science was such a good idea. Hopefully the job market improves in the next 3 years!
