Here's how. I work/worked at the Ocala KMART Distribution Center, which is a hardline DC. We service ver 200 stores in the south and PR and the US virgin islands. Ever since 2 weeks before Christmas we have not been working full weeks. It started a only working 4 days a week then 3 and now on Mon. they told us we are only working Mon. and Thru. this week and next week also. We had a general meeting with the VP of distribution on Monday also where they said KMART just got 1.5 billion of financing on Fri. and that the outlook looked good for 2002. Talk about blowing smoke up our ass. Now on Tues. the file chapter 11. Whats worse is we have no choice where ore company match in our 401K goes too, KMART stock. Since I'm not vested (5years) I could not touch it. So I lost over $6000, which may not sound like much but when you only make 27,000 a year it does hurt. I do however have good news. I have an interview at a Wal-mart Distribution Center about 1 hour from my house.

sean2002, sorry to hear about your situation, good luck w/ the Wal-Mart interview, let us know what happens.

I was just in a Kmart today, it looked like half the people had quit already, there was product laying all over the floors, huge messes everywhere, nobody bothering to clean up anything. It was horrible... I was looking for an LCD monitor... Went over to Walmart, I felt like I was in Saks Fifth Ave compared to Kmart...

Bad juju...

bah, walmart won't be interested in the big k

Good luck on that new job, distribution centers for walmart are great places to work I hear

<< how many people were working there at the time? >>

Well there is a little over 700 of us at the DC. So far they have never had to lay off anyone, even though I would make more money from unemployment than I do working 2 days a week. LOL Even though they only filed chapter11 (restructuring) they will not be around long and here's why.

1. 18 months ago they spent 50 million to come up with a new inventory control, wharehouse managment system called WMS, now they are spending another 60 million to go back to a system more like the old one, called PKMS WTF ?

2. WAY too much managment. 1 department has 3 supervisors @ 37K/year and 3 managers @55K/year and 1 operations Manager @ 70K/year. Did I mention there is only 23 people in the department !

And we wonder why Kmart is going out of business. *sigh* Looks like they made a lot of poor management decisions.

hehe, that's what Kmart always looks like. I've been to dozens of Kmarts from coast to coast in my travels, and the only ones that didn't look like that were brand new Big K's that had just opened.

KMart had to spend the money on their distribution infrastructure, that's one of the areas they were bleeding money and where Walmart's strengths are. Walmarts distribution and database infrastructure is so damned efficient the U.S. military was interested in patterning its own supply/inventory operations after it. I don't know what came of that...

I worked for Wal-mart for 7 years--6 years in retail and 1 year in a DC, and can say that the DC is not a bad job for unskilled labor. Working for walmart from when I was a Jr. in high school till I graduated college really was a good learning experience for me. The DC by far made me the most money--around $11.50/hr back in 1997-1998 which is good for Ottawa, KS.

Anyway, its a decent job. I was an unloader who worked 4-12 hr shifts a week. It was nice at the time, but would be hard to go back to now that I have a computer related job.

Anyway, my neighbor drives for penske/kmart and he said their dist centers are always a mess, disorganized, and in shambles.

i've known about this particular aspect of k-mart for years; my sister used to work for them in middle management and never had anything good to say about it.

Sorry to hear about your situation. These are volatile times, and I'm just happy to have a job. An hour commute doesn't sound like too much fun, but I still hope you get/got the job. Best of luck!

[dJ], KMart-bound after work today!

That really sucks.

The Gov is looking to step in, after that Enron mess, and make it illegal for companies to invest more than a certian % of a persons 401K in their own company. Sounds good and is way overdue.

You should have looked to see where your money was going in that 401K first, I never invest in them if they use it for themselves (read: I invest my own money). If I work for morons, which seems to be the case, I am not going to trust the CFO moron to handle my money.

Once again, sorry about that. Try to put your money somewhere else next time, talk to a, ugh, broker or better yet a financial planner. I admire that you are trying to put some money aside.

You see what happens when you piss off any sizable portion of society? When Rosie O'Donnell started talking about how no one should have guns, and KMart stood idly by, taking guns off their shelves, many of the gun lobby started boycotting them. BTW: I think effectively the same result would have happened if they started talking out against, say, abortions and a large % of librals stoped buying from them.
