I drove 290 Miles (there and back) to the closest Best Buy that had a BFG 6800GT in stock. Final cost after gas, tolls and bestbuy card discount is ~$435.00.

Unfortunately I cant use it till I can purcase the MSI Neo 2 Platinum 939 Socket Mobo. I wont even bother installing in my current system 1.333 Mhz etc. I dont care if it will improve it I dont want to bother till I can see it in all of it's glory.

Oh, and if it had been at my local bestbuy which sold them under my nose on monday I would have only paid ~$408.00 so it cost me an extra $27.00.

I called my local Best Buy and got the guy in computers to check all stores that have it and then which is closest and I got the phone numbers for the closest two from him. Then I printed the directions off the internet that they provide @ Bestbuy.com for other stores after calling to make sure they had it and then beg them to hold it telling them I am getting in my car as soon as I get off the phone. Total trip took ~6 hours. I only had 9 minutes left before they closed when I arrived sweating and out of breath. I almost didnt make it and actually stopped in that median where you decide is this the right way or not illegally a few times making sure I was going the right way. I even pulled over at a toll center to make sure I didnt go the wrong way. If I made a single mistake I would have never made it in time.

Yes, I consider it an insane moment. I almost hung up the phone several times thinking what the hell are you doing. Just wait you idiot. You will get one locally or online sooner or later, etc. But, before I convinced myself to hang up the guy was back on the phone and I was kinda commited and would have felt like I whimped out at that point.

I hear you Don if it had been the second location it would have been another 120 miles round trip for a total 410 miles or more. Also I would never have made it to that store on Sunday and may not have gone at all having had time to think about what I was doing. lol

This underscores the incredible amount of hysteria around the 6800 series and Doom3.. LOL..

Guy at best buy says they have like 50-100 people a day asking for the BFG GT's... LMAO..

You are the man!

I did a somewhat similar thing today but didn't have to go nearly that far away. Neither of the two nearby Best Buys had it, but their website indicated that another store somewhat further away (40 miles, nothing really bad) had some in stock and I managed to get there about 15 minutes before the store closed for the day. Do the BBs keep the new cards on the shelves at all? I only saw a single X800 pro there but decided to ask one of the sales people just in case; he said that they had just recieved a small shipment of the GTs and brought one out from storage. Needless to say, I took it to the checkout counter immediately.

By the way, are there two different versions of the BFG card? I got one with two small blue fans on the heatsink and a chrome finish, but all the pictures I have seen on the internet have one larger fan with a heatsink sticker (basically the reference design). Did they release a newer revision or something?

CP5670 & Juice I can verify that. My GeForce 6800GT Overclocked etc. Has the double blue fans with silver housing and a copper heatsink etc.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that when I called the store that I purchased my card from they also did NOT have it on the shelves. The guy I talked to that held it for me said that he couldnt find it on the shelves and asked a few people in the store and they said they didnt have it. Then I said that my bestbuy said they did have it in stock as of an hour ago and would he please look up the model number which I gave him and check again. He came back and said that yes the computer said that they did have one in the store but he didnt know where it was. Then he said I need some time to track it down let me call you back in 10 minutes and I will find out where it is and what is going on with it etc. So, I have him my phone number and he called back and said he had it! I said fantastic is it sealed? He said yes! I said great please hold it I am going straight to my car after I hang up and I should be their about 15 minutes before you close. I got there 9 minutes before they closed. He was like I was starting to doubt you were comming when I got to the store. etc. Long story short they are being held by employee's or something while they have friends come in and buy them or something. Definately make sure if you call or go to a store that you make them look up the model number in the system and if one is supposed to be in the store talk to a manager if they say they cant find it and be nice about it but explain how hard you have been trying to get it and the manager will find it and kick the employee's azz. I have been through that with bestbuy three times now. Last time was with the Collectors Platinum Edition of Unreal Tournament 2004 the version that came in the Aluminum box.

Almost makes me feel bad for getting one of the first cards that Compusa got in, the day it came in, at employee cost, that I picked up on the way home from work, $319.00+tax  [grabs flame suit, runs and hides, bobbing and weaving]

I drove 11 miles for a quick stop at BestBuy 30 minutes before work.

Work is across the street, so it wasn't out of my way.

You guys are insane.

Actaeon, yes but you never know what you might have done after waiting a month to get it and find out that it still isnt availabe etc. For me I cracked when I found out my local store had 2 in which sold on monday and tuesday last week. I called them tuesday and they said they didnt have any but I didnt ask them to look up the model number just asked if they had the BFG 6800GT etc. Moral is make sure they look up the model number in the pc and ask them to check all stores for it and decide if your willing to make the drive.

Do you happen to know if they ever changed it or whether this heatsink is more powerful than the normal one? I was wondering if they did in response to Doom 3's taxing of OC'd cards more than other games.

Long story short they are being held by employee's or something while they have friends come in and buy them or something.

That's interesting...I wonder if the guy who I talked to at the local BB was doing something like this. I went there a few weeks ago after seeing the BB website saying that it had them in stock. I tried calling them before going just in case but they transferred me like three times (in between long holds), so I finally hung up and just decided to go and find out. A guy there told me that neither this store nor the other nearby BB carry that item at all (despite what their website said), although he did check the item number in their database.

I am thinking about selling mine if Compusa happens to get an Ultra. (it is not for sale, it is just something I am thinking about)

The salesman at the BB where I got mine said they had also a single Ultra there (the non-waterblock BFG one for $500) but I was almost certain that the ultra would not work with my existing power supply, which is a 400w but only does 15A at 12V. I got occasional lockups with the GT too, so I disconnected a CD writer and a side fan for now and it now works perfectly at the default 370/1000mhz speed. The coolbits "detect optimal frequencies" thing is only showing a paltry 385/1030 though and I'm sure it's due to the power supply.

I will probably buy a new psu soon; any recommendations? I want something that will last me a while but doesn't cost too much (ready to go up to $130 or so if it's a powerful and reliable model). The OCZ 520w one looks appealing with its adjustable voltages and dedicated video card lines. Anyone here have it and could give their thoughts?

Whoa.. that's... crazy. :p

For the record, I did something similar once. When Lifeforce for the NES came out, I biked all across town to get it, and I paid in change. :p I still remember, I was sweating like a ... well, whatever, when I went in there to pay for it, so that I could get a copy before they sold out. Unfortunately, just before I arrived, my bike tire blew out on my 10-speed. So I had to shove the NES game into my pocket and walk my bike the entire way home. To top it off, the home game was... nothing like the arcade one. Only two 'option' ships instead of 4, no voice, and the levels were different. I was a bit disappointed. Still a decent game, if not great.
Those were the days...
