approx 1 in 200 are allergic to peanuts
According to MedicineWorld.org, Peanut or tree nut allergies affect approximately 0.6 percent and 0.4 percent of Americans, respectively, and cause the most severe food-induced allergic reactions. So, I guess 1 in 200 is about right.
I do think it strange that so many more people are allergic now versus 30 or 40 years ago and, I do not think it is a matter of greater awareness.

When did everybody start becoming allergic to peanuts. Even back when I was in grade school (born in '81) there was only one kid that I ever knew to be allergic. Now it seems like a much larger portion have peanut allergies.

Is it just me, or is more and more stuff being labeled "May Contain Peanuts" than even should be. IT seems its gotten to the point where everything was manufactured by a company that also produces toys near a factory that once had a peanut in it, so all their produces "May Contain Peanuts". I've wondered if this a figment of my imagination, or some lawsuit-happy jerks are pushing companies to declare that anything even remotely ingestable may contain peanuts, to protect from frivolous lawsuits. My $.02

I blame your wife. She told you to pick up the Lunchable. If it were my husband, and I had told him to grab something, he wouldnt think to re-read something I already said to get. He'd assume that I knew already.
