Well crap

I've been less that excited about the speed of my DSL connection, so I signed up for a cable modem service. I just hooked it up, and to my disappointment it is slightly slower than the DSL connection 🙁

I ran the speakeasy speed test with the DSL, and got around 1000kbps DL. With the cable, I get about 950kbps.

THe crappy part is the sell the cable service as 8Mbps, with the words "up to" in microscopic print.

At least it's half price for the first year

yeah cable can go that fast but its all up to where you live, and who is using it next door.

Obviously you're only option is to get a T3 line....

You have a BAD cable company if you're actually getting speeds that slow on a 8 Mbps line. Call tech support and make them do a test on your line to find the noise and all that jazz. Your modem might be operating slowly because the line is too noisy for it to work faster. Is your TV signal perfectly clear?

I have 10 Mbps cable in a big apartment complex in a busy part of town and I still get the full 10 Mbps.

sukhoi is right. You can also do a trace and see if you are being sent to some far off place when you try to download from places. I remember once i use to play on a server in NY(I live in PA) and I would be bounced all the way to the midwest states and then back to new york...they fixed that.

A guy I work with got a T1 installed to his house a few months ago. It's around $350-$400 a month.

THe interesting thing is, the line got cut between my house and the node in the neighbors back yard. They ran a brand new temporary line between my house and a node in the new subdivision behind me. Hopefully when they put in the permanent line, the quality of the service will increase

That's probably it. If you're there when they replace it tell them to check the signal quality if they weren't going to already, since you're having speed problems.

Aren't you in the telecom industry? 😉

AFAIK a properly run cable network is faster than a DSL network, especially at long distances from the CO.

Isn't a T1 line pretty slow by todays standards? Like 1.5MB or something?

dsl is more stable speeds if youre close enough to the switching station in your area. otherwise, its pretty much up to the distance and wiring between you and it. if your house has phone lines that were installed in 1963 then youre probably not going to have a very good dsl connection. cable onthe other hand, is solid as long as your neighbors arent flooding it with ricky martin video downloads and stuff like that. i till prefer cable. ill take 12Mbps shared over 1.5Mbps solid any day of the week, especially when my dsl at work is choked by the distance from the station (3.2 miles) and the crappy old wiring they are still relying on.

i have the minimum comcast cable and it gives me 25000kbps consistantly (350kbps up only). I think comcast did something to specifically give higher marks on the small packet deliveries. For larger file transfers, i get closer to 750KBps (6000 kbps) which is what my service agreement is for (up to).

Here in my lab, im getting 69834 kbps (dn)/ 7018 kbps (up). I didnt know the numbers went that high as I would never require this bandwidth.

I think you pay for the reliability

I decided to blow off the DSL company. They have nodes with Fiber right in my back yard (literally) for the customers in the new development right behind me (Fiber to the home for them). I told them I would pay for the trenching and Fiber line if they would just come out and install it. They declined my offer.

My house is old, and my entire family gets by with about 300 kbps

Of course, my sister and I are in college, so this doesn't happen often anymore, but up until 2003 we still had dial-up

No offense, but suck it in.

Cables maximum possible speed is quite a bit faster then any DSL connection for downloading at least (uploads are normally capped on cable) however DSL speeds don't fluctuate anywhere near as much depending on the time of day. My cable averages over 16mbs download-speeds according to speed tests (I'm highly skeptical) but only 512kbs upload which is still a lot faster then the last time I had DSL.. hopefully FIOS will become available soon & raise the limits.
