Wouldn't just a _small_ amount of research have revealed to you how expensive and crowded L.A. is?

Definitely not for everyone (which is saying something, given how many freaking people live in that shithole).

How long did you last?

2 years. it was a good job opportunity. i was looking for something different. i definitely benefited from the move technically - i've learned a hell of a lot.

Unfortunately most of us have to be at work at the same time as everyone else. Now that I moved though I suffer zero traffic.

I work 9-6 (well 930-630) like the rest of ya'll.

i also live 15 minutes from work via scooter/car/bike and refuse to drive from 5p-7p on weekdays ^_

i was coming home from sherman oaks at 1130 on a saturday night. somehow, there is a traffic backup. i do not understand why.

405 south into westside ^_^

You might need a bit more college experience to manage a MacD's, but at least it's something to aim for. You might be qualified enough now to clean the bathrooms and mop the floors there, though. And there's a long waiting list to be hired. So you better hurry up and apply.

But seriously, that sounds potentially like a job for road, bridge or high rise construction.

There's still plenty of that in Texas going on.

I moved out here for a new job in engineering consulting / failure analysis, and while the job is pretty neat, it's just not my cup of tea.

Coupled with the insanely high cost of living in LA (a started rowhome with underground garage is $525k) and traffic at every hour of the day, I'm looking to move back east/south (most of my family is in DC metro area). or texas.

any ideas for MD/VA, SC, NC, AL, GA, TX (preferably round rock/austin)?

i'm a materials engineer/metallurgist with experience in materials selection, design and lifing, and failure analysis. i'd like to get into more design/analysis/production of things, i think.

Check out Greenville, SC. You really will be pleasantly surprised. I really love Colorado. The cost of living is high, but not LA high. Mountains are bit everyone's cup of tea.

Definitely check out Greenville.

smart man

i actually normally don't have to drive during rush hour. i take side streets to work. my issue is that, when it's not rush hour, there are still traffic backups!

405 baby! I think of the 100s of times I've driven past the Sunset exit on 405 heading south, I've done it without traffic.... once.

When my wife was considering residency options, there was a ton of tech in the Raleigh-Durham area. That's all of my contribution. Good luck.

Holy balls has it been 2 years already?

Well I think we all need to hang out one more time before you go!

Have you checked with your alma mater's career/placement office? I'm sure that was a while ago for you but they ought to have some useful contacts, and if you talk to someone that knows anything they should be able to point you to regions where your trade is doing especially well right now.

Oh, and screw Texas. I've lived there (near Galveston) and I don't have anything nice to say about it.
