SEIU VP Eliseo Medin @ 1:30
"...we reform the immigration laws, it puts 12 million people on the path to citizenship and eventually voters. Can you imagine if we have, even the same ratio 2 out of 3, can get 8 million new voters that care about our issue and will be voting, we will be creating a governing coalition for the long term not just for an election cycle."

That's what it all comes down to, getting illegal immigrants to vote democrat. More power, more money. At least he's honest.

Both parties pander to the Latino groups... promising some type of amnesty for illegals. Yeh, despite what the leftwingnuts on here say... it is for votes.

We're all screwed. Democrats want voters and Republicans want cheap workers. No one represents American citizens. Welcome to the third world.
I say deport them all, Mexican, Irish, Chinese and anyone else that doesn't belong here.
I say nationalize the assets of anyone caught here illegally, that should help pay for their removal.

You can get cheap workers right here in the US. We have 10% unemployment. If we abolished minimum wage, I'm sure alot of that 10% will be employed.

8 million concentrated in just a few states isn't going to do much.

How about both sides start pandering to the American people for a change.

Whoa, progressives have a hidden agenda, and are just typical politician scum? Nothing surprising here.

I'm with you.

45 years ago, Democrats faced a choice whether to lead on civil rights, and pay a big political price from the bigots. They did, and they did. No non-southern Democrat was elected president for 48 years.

Now, immigration raises both issues of people who think it's right to have a policy to make the illegal immigrats legal, as well as the people who think it's right not to - and the fact that taking the latter position seems to have a political cost. If you are in the 'it's right not to legalize them' camp, you are in something of a similar situation - do you stand by your guns, probably Republican, and wait for the Dems to legalize them and get the possible political credit? What if it denies you the White House for decades?

I don't know how the politics would work out between the votes gained by new legalized voters, and the votes lost to the people who opposed it.

It's too bad though, that the issue can't be decided on some better grounds than the vote calculations, and only selfish considerations of the impact.

There is a certain legitimacy to 'protecting our interests' on this - but we give up some moral legitimacy when we choose policies to nudge nudge, wink wink let 20 million be here and supply cheap labor for our benefit and evade any laws protecting the workers. There's also a certain legitiacy to trying to treat the people fairly and justly as fellow human beings. But those seem lost in the discussion.

How we can protect Americans' legitimate interests while having some concern for Mexicans there and here doesn't get much consideration.

The civil right movement succeeded because of civil unrest and popular rebellion. The Dems didn't lead shit. They masterfully exploited the popular uprising. They will attempt to do the same thing with immigration reform.

You forgot the part about how the popular uprising occurred because people actually were being oppressed and treated unfairly with the help of govt.

They don't need to pander to you. You'll vote straight ticket no matter what the politicians of your side do.

The indigenous population of this nation has a right to protect itself from invasion. Blacks in the civil rights movement were Americans. The government has a duty to protect and treat Americans equally.

In one case you asked America to uphold its duty, now you’re asking to destroy it.

I love how liberals compare illegal immigrants to African Americans (all of whom are US citizens) during the civil rights era. Man the level at which you lefties stoop to make an apples to oranges comparison is hilarious. Hey if it gets them a vote WTF who cares right?

What is this 'indigenous population' that you speak of?

I'm not asking America to destroy anything. You just say that because you're just paranoid, afraid to compete, and running to govt for protection. Be careful what you ask for. Anti-immigration is the biggest big govt agenda of them all.
