While NVIDIA is based out of Santa Clara, they hold their yearly NVISION conference out in San Jose. Apparently this event is such a big deal to San Jose, that they're making the whole week of the 20th "Visual Computing Week", there's even an official commendation later today at City Hall.

With that said, am I the only one that finds the whole thing absurd?

LOL, no confirmation necessary with that sig of yours. And that was reduced. ;)

I came "><" close to going to Nvision08, but I can't get off from work. Used up most of my vacation days going to Disney with my family a few weeks ago.
It really is going to be a big event. Lots of celebs, marathon LAN gaming, Mythbusters, etc.
Oh well, maybe next year for me.

What's absurd about it? It's business. These sorts of conferences rake in big bucks for the hospitality industry, not to mention it promotes San Jose as a good place for high-tech businesses. They wouldn't want them to feel unwelcome and have the conference get moved to say, San Francisco, in the future right?

Both Intel and AMD get tax breaks and other incentives when they pick a place to build their fabs and other facilities - those countries or cities where those facilities get built gain jobs, so it's worth it.

Don't cost San Jose nothin' to declare "Nvidia Week" or whatever it is, so it can't hurt, right?

Its just that I don't like Nvidia *the company*....However, I do like their cards *except for the 7 series*. The 8 series is great as is the current gen.

not at all

Nvidia is the heart of Silicon Valley and i am sure San Jose gets a lot of income from them and their event - Nvision attracts many people. And San Jose is a great place to visit in Summer [it's cool and near SF] :p

i am going to Nvision; it's my vacation this year :)

EDIT: You all know how much i love Nvidia :p
- BtW, did i mention that my 4870x2 [BestBuy's $469 sale] just shipped?

Why personalize competition if you are simply a consumer? As a consumer, be glad that competition brings higher performance and lower costs. Hell, my wish is for several more companies to delve into the GPU market and provide comparable products at comparable costs.

I guarantee you that once Nvidia develops the G2gazillion GPU and offers performance at a good price point, people will flock towards Nvidia once again.

Hehehe thing is even if you don't like them you still should wish them well because if they don't do good then the cards from the company you do like will cost more ;p

Why doesn't 80% of AT like them?

Fixed the question. The answer is the same reason 80% of college kids walk around with Macs.

Unknown? You know their editor already and probably all of our writers:p; the official ABT launch is in 27 days .. and it sure beats the hell out of me just C&P it here and then entitling it in my post:
"what i did on my vacation this year"

rose.gif

i AM going back next year. NVISION08 was one hellofa trade show .. i know some intel people didn't like it, but i missed IDF and can't compare. i do like it better than CES which is all glitz. At Nvision, all the reps are extremely helpful and only at the end of the day do you find burned-out ones. Plus you can get tons of info you aren't supposed to get

There were even some gorgeous product reps that i thought were 'eye candy' .. as some of the young ladies were .. but these girls really knew their HW!

brains AND beauty .. a geek's dream

No! Reason..... they piss me off!!

they used to irritate me .. remember i am the guy with the AMD X3 graphics powering my own rig .. and it had something to do with me perceiving Nvidia as "arrogant".

However, i get it now. Nvidia is an extended loyal tech 'family' that *believes* in their product and in their company vision like almost none other. From the CEO to the janitor.

it is confidence, not arrogance
