Wasn't it a given that he'd win? I had thought the elections were simply a dog and pony show.

Yes, just like in the United States. If the mass media can't be brought to bear to control the outcome of an election, it can always be rigged through computer software and other shenanigans.

A man of the people, from the people, for the people. He takes care of the poor. Oil revenues pay for housing for the poor, healthcare, and free education for those that cannot afford it. sounds like a modern day Robin Hood.

Who did he steal the oil from. How is it not national treasure. Why should some fucking corporation make a profit from oil that belongs to the people. Only morons would give the nations wealth to a few people, morons like in the USA. Even the assholes in Alaska who are mostly Republican aren't quite that stupid.

You'd have to be a complete fucking naive tool to believe that government pillaging privately owned assets of firms will lead to some "workers paradise" or that it would bring about the efficiencies and success found in free markets. Maybe you need to put down that red bible of yours and take off the blinders because compared to leading South American economies such as Colombia and Brazil it is Venezuela that is far behind the curve.

What now for Venezuela's economy?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-19813533

- 20% inflation rate

- Wealth redistribution that has wealth creation stagnating amongst Venezuela's populace (i.e. everyone is slowly becoming equally poor)

- A steady shrinking of private enterprise in Venezuela's economy as government takes over and involves itself in more industries.

- An in ability to diversify their economy beyond oil sales.

- A further inability to draw private foreign investments from overseas investors due to fears of nationalization of industries.

- Massive amounts of government waste and inefficiencies in industries they have taken over.

- A growing large growing government debt as result of inflation and overspending within government.

M: Hey moron, I own the air and you have to pay me to draw a breath. I have title filed with a galactic cartel. You think fucking free air is going to lead to a breather's Paradise. Maybe you need to put down your head and pick up one with a brain. Earth is a backwater planet full of morons who think they own things. Zocloth claimed Earth 42 million years ago and registered it with the cartel. You're not even a pimple on the ass of time.

Rather than a propaganda article from the BBC wich is known
to be anti Chavez , let s look at Wiki and see how great where
the venezuelian rightists achievements using the oil bonanza
before El Presidente took office....

As the economy contracted in the 1980s, inflation levels (consumer price inflation) fell, remaining between 6 and 12% from 1982 to 1986.[24] In the late 80s and early 90s inflation rose to around 30 - 40% annually, with a 1989 peak of 84%.[24] The mid-1990s saw annual rates of 50-60% (1993 to 1997) with an exceptional peak in 1996 at 99.88%.[24] Subsequently inflation has remained in a range of around 15% to 30%.[24]
By 1998, the economic crisis had grown even worse. Per capita GDP was at the same level as 1963, down a third from its 1978 peak; and the purchasing power of the average salary was a third of its 1978 level.[25]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Venezuela

Once they lost the power to starve the people , the venezuelian
fascist right attempted a coup d' etat with the support of the US ,
and being unsuccessful they tried to sabotage the economy ,
never mind that this would impoverish the people further.

Hugo Chávez was elected president in December 1998 and took office in February 1999. His economic policies have been more socialistic than those of his predecessors. In the first four years of the Chávez presidency, the economy grew at first (1999–2001), then contracted from 2001 - 2003 to GDP levels similar to 1997, at first because of low oil prices, then because of the turmoil caused by the 2002 coup attempt and the 2002-2003 business strike.

So in a word , long live mr. Chavez , a true man of progress.

Haha, oh well. This is the election result the Venezuelan people wanted, so they can lie in the rhetorical bed they've made a while longer.

Hey Saddam was much better at this stuff, he got elected by 98% of the vote. Chavez sucks, with complete control of the media, government, schools, police and the military he could only get about half the vote.

Hopefully he croaks sooner than later.

Closest, most vocal anti-American despot?

Surprising it was as close as it was, esp considering the restrictions the challenger had to campaign against. I guess the violence and food problems are finally starting to get to people.

All that oil $$$ going to educate/feed his people instead of profits for the top who scammed their way there fair and square sure pisses em off.

What more sacred and unholy sin could you commit in the eyes of a conservative then fucking up their capitalist hustle and get rich quick religion.

Dictator my ass, (most free and open elections anywhere) owns and controls the media my ass. Watch some Venezuela TV, they trash Chavez all day everyday, they would make Foxnews blush if you compared their trashing of Obama as a commie.

If anything Venezuela news is what Foxnews (and the rest of our media they are dragging down to the lowest common sensationalist denominator) will be in 5-10 years.

With that said, I have a lot of complaints about comrade Chavez's style of Bolivarian Socialist Revolution, but speaking of such things is beyond the realm of corporate media talking points and accepted thinking in here.

...from their shanty towns, and slums. Chavez is working out great for them.

Funny, if you Google images of "rich Venezuelans" it's like 98% pictures of Chavez.

Why would you comment on this when you are not Venezuelan? I thought that disqualified your opinion?
