Welcome to Rio. Take a swim and get sick.

More hilarity from the second most corrupt body in the world - the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Second only to FIFA.

The waters of Rio have been deemed unsafe. Not to drink. But to touch. The US Junior Rowing team got sick from just rowing in the water.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...n-team-got-sick-from-rios-contaminated-water/

But this wasn't a surprise. Rio knew when they got the games that it was bad - but the IOC handled that by placing a ban on any and all information that the respective competing countries gathered. So while the Olympians know that getting in the water is taking their life into their own hands - they aren't allowed to publish the test results of the water.

The Associated Press, in a rare stroke of responsibility, did their own testing.

http://bigstory.ap.org/article/a098...tigation-dirty-rio-water-threat-2016-olympics

With the unsurprising result:
The test results consistently found high counts of active and infectious human adenoviruses, which cause explosive diarrhea, violent vomiting, respiratory trouble and other illnesses.

The result? The IOC has refused to test for viruses in the water. Because.

http://www.nbcsports.com/ioc-rules-out-viral-testing-rios-olympic-waters

This issue was brought up in the media and brought to the IOC's attention in 2009. I feel horrible for our olympians. They spend a lifetime working toward competing and then have their lives put at risk by something this ridiculous. Stay classy IOC. Stay classy Brazil.

But hey.... at least they'll have that stadium.

Dumping raw, untreated sewage straight into the ocean is common practise in Latin America. Most countries are smart enough though to empty their shit pipes away from the tourist areas. Brazil apparently isn't. The locals have allegedly developed immunity after years of exposure. So I guess proper sanitation isn't considered a necessity.

International sports events like the Olympics rarely benefit their host city or its residents. The money Rio has wasted would have been better spent building a modern sanitation system.

Paying for sports is generally a losing proposition all around, but hosting can have lasting improvements for residents. I've heard the Chinese have been agitating for cleaner air after getting a taste from the Olympic cleanup. If Brazil gets its shit together(see what I did there?), and cleans up the water, it may help over the long term, even if there's a bit of lag.

Anyone who volunteers to compete in that shit water needs to ask himself/herself what his/her priorities in life are.

P.S. People don't just flush shit down their drains. Industrial wastes, anyone?

The athletes that are expected to compete in that water should just boycott the Olympics.

I heard about this on NPR a few weeks ago.
Someone basically said... if you're planning on going to the Olympics go early to try to build up an immunity before the games start.

Big Olympics is just about the dollars. That's why no US public money should go to fund it. No welfare for Big Olympics. Let them pay taxes if they host games in the US. It's big business.

What a damn shame. The IOC I guess is as corrupt as the World Cup organization what ever their name is.

I read years ago that the IOC has to bring in a boat load of condoms because of all the sex. LMAO!

This is going to get more and more interesting as the date gets closer. The IOC should have picked Madrid, they were first runner-up. However the IOC wanted to spread the Olympics around after 2012 and 2004 having the Olympics Europe.

The Olympics in SLC benefited us long term. They improved the freeway and installed a fiber backbone. We are now called the silicon slopes because so many tech companies come here, in part, because of the fiber. Just ask Google.

Italy is still dumping its crap in the lakes, luckily the polluted area is limited to their side of the lake.
Still, if you're dumping waste from buildings into the earth and other random stuff, it will enter such lagoon which are within the city, surrounded by buildings (and the bad sewage infrastructure). Nobody bathes in lagoons anyway.

you can do that without the olympics and spare money.

Still, the worst offender is the football world cup.

There needs to be a concentrated agenda by multiple countries to refuse to participate in any water-based sports in this Olympics. Who knows if it will happen, but four confirmed severe illnesses in a week isn't just a coincidence. I feel the countries have an obligation to protect their athletes, even from themselves. The athletes surely know the risk now, but what options do they have? Throw away years of training and their only real prospects because of a bunch of douchebags foregoing their safety for.... country diversity or some other equally bullshit reason?

The plug needs to be pulled by the coaches, and the organizers of each individual country if the IOC refuses to do it. Then IOC can do nothing other than change the venue, or risk decentralization. Frankly, it is ridiculous that it has gotten this far along.

I'm pretty sure I've known about this since those parrots were singing about it in that animated documentary.

Let me take you to Rio
Swimming in our oceans can be lethal
In most of the world it's illegal
That's never bothered the IOC though
