The defector is being identified only with the surname Oh, according to Reuters. In the gunfire during his escape, he was shot five times.

Dr. Lee Cook-jong, a surgeon who treated Oh after his escape, told outlets, including the Times, that when doctors performed surgery on the his intestinal wounds, they found parasitic worms 11 inches long.

"In my 20 years as a surgeon, I have only seen something like this in a medical textbook," Lee said.

I actually shed a tear when I saw this on the news. This man is very lucky, but I hope his alinements that he now has because of that shit hole doesn't shorten his life of newly found freedom.

Yeah, those stories out of North Korea are always horrifying. Someone did a documentary about an American who defected to North Korea and his life there. Very interesting stuff, I'm surprised the Koreans let it leave the country.

The absolute terrible thing about this is his family will now pay a heavy price and so will generations of his family. Sometimes I think we should go in there with South Korea and Japan on our side and free that fuck up of a country.

Very terrible situation they have going on there.

Yep. North Korea is a terrible place and it's a terrible situation. As far as dealing with them, it's just about the textbook definition of a no-win.

^ Are you joking? N.Korea is an abomination to human rights. It's so bad that it shouldn't be joked about. Not at all, not even a little humor in what suffering is going on there.

I am opposed to war but this is a rare case, it can't continue. That only prolongs the suffering.

I am not quick to make assumptions, but human rights have to be seen as a global problem, even if we try to stick to economic benefits there is still a line that is just too far crossed and unacceptable if we as a species hope to continue evolving.

This has happened time and time again. Some things just can't be tolerated, there is no way to negotiate and allow in the longer term.

NK was a reason for our leader to pick yet another fight, and everyone (it seems) loves a fight. It's good for the Trump brand.

How much NK suffering is caused by sanctions? If "there is no way to negotiate," what is Tillerson doing? The U.N.? Where do we go when negotiations are given up?

Edit: Everyone on both sides knows what war would lead to, that alleviates my fear.
