so i'm in pakistan now for a few months (parents live here) and just went to my dad's business. apparently DSL is JUST starting up here, but until we jump on the bandwagon we have a small company with about 60 computers hooked up to a SINGLE DIAL UP connection at 33.6K.

it took me like 5 minutes just to load the my forums page in ATOT... looks like i'll be cutting down my visits :(

will i survive without bandwidth?! find out more next time i manage to log on... say in like a week!! ;)

I've been connecting through dialup at my home south of Seattle... max connection speed is usually around 28.8k, if I'm lucky, usually more like 20k. Needless to say, such stays at home cut down on my web visits.

whoa, 60 computers on 1 line... that's not even useable. Only for text-only pages.

well only 10 are online at a given time, and the extent of usage is MSN messenger and emails (small size text only!)

and get this- here's the best part. i'm looking into corporate connectivitity, and a 64KB ISDN line costs about 200 bucks a MONTH. and thats a SHARED LINE with 4 other users!!

i can't get over this. internet in this country is probably 2 decades behind...

I was there last summer, In which city are you? I know how you feel! The internet cafe I went to had 30 pcs on 56k, damn it sucked.

no, only about ten years

the first cable modem systems were publically available/tested in ~'97 (before any dsl) , before that the only options were dial/isdn/frame relay

in karachi. wow, they have internet cafe's here?? ;)
maybe i should get a "nice" dedicated whole 128KB line and open up an internet cafe with our resources (we run a computer training center)

Use Opera and make sure the cache sizes are generous

<--has a 24k connection at home. I've connected at 4800 once (nope, no K in there). I know the pain.

I was in Karachi also, They have a bunch of internet cafes there. I take it you havent gotten to see the city yet?

I would just forget about the internet if I was you. :p You should still be able to IM people though.

Can you get some sort of Satellite system that's based out of the US and wuld therfor be much cheaper? I don't know if any have access in other areas or not but you don't need any hardline for those.

the main issue would be what satellites are available. since data satellites are geosynchronous, the ones you hit from the US are obviously not available on the other side of the planet.

satellite isn't too bad , compared to dial up (i am posting via satellite), just expensive by american consumer grade broadband standards
