More Obama lip service. Now he can say that he closed Gitmo while giving more federal dollars to his home state. Two campaign promises with one stone! Maybe he was feeling guilty since the whole Olympics thing didn't take. What a crock.

Hope the detainees like their new digs. Where would you rather be? I think this move is a serious mistake, but let's appease all those critics of Gitmo and create a more accessible location for jihad crazies to express their "views".

Foreign battlefield combatants doesn't mean they have to be picked up on an actual battlefield found shooting at people. The so-called battlefield has been defined as many things in the war on terror by our government.
So in other words any non-US citizen who happens to arbitrarily get labelled as a "battlefield combatant" by the US government? (The Bush administration wanted it to apply to US citizens as well but the US Supreme Court ultimately wouldn't let him.)

So I take it you believe that they should be tried and if found not guilty released. Those found guilty, well a SuperMax sounds like a perfect place for them to be.

It has already happened.. Ever read Patriot Act 1 & 2? The Supreme Court hasn't rejected it. They're in collusion with the unconstitutional conduct. Obama is in support of the same as well.

Yes. Since day 1, I have said that if we can't charge these guys, we need to let them go. Wrongful imprisonment is one of the worst crimes out there. I don't see how they can be tried in the US court system, since their alleged crimes were not allegedly committed in the US. The international community needs to solve this problem. Unfortunately, the international community is better at creating problems than solving them at this point. Alternatively, these guys could be tried in Afghanistan/whichever country they were captured in in the first place.

The last category consists of -- as President Obama put it in his speech at the National Archives -- “people who cannot be prosecuted for past crimes, in some cases because evidence may be tainted, but who nonetheless pose a threat to the security of the United States.”
LOL, did he rip that out of Stalin's memoirs or something?

The paranoia of the GOP for transferring these prisoners to this Illinois super max prison is laughable at best.
Yeah, that's one thing I've never understood. I remember one of the Senators from my state was vehement about not letting any of these guys be transferred here. It makes no sense, because I can guarantee we have far more dangerous people in our prison system already. These guys are terrorists, not supermen.

But this really changes nothing, closing Gitmo and just moving them up here.

The real tragedy here is that the military should have just quietly interrogated these cretins out in the field and then used them for target practice or medical experiments. Instead we're spending huge amounts of money to keep them alive while creating a public relations nightmare. What a waste.
