Welcome Insight number.. 3?

OK, so the last one was to save money over the long haul. This one is just a pure splurge. 😉 It was too good of a deal to pass up. When we first bought it, I thought that I could fix it and sell it for a nice profit. They're selling for 6-13k right now.

Before we even took delivery though, it became apparent that we're just going to keep it. We're in love with these cars, and it would be too hard to replace. And Jay Leno thinks they'll be collectors cars one day, so that's good enough for me. This is only the 3rd sub-$3000 specimen I've seen.

2000 Silver 5 speed with 226k miles and a lifetime average of 70.2MPG.

Just after taking delivery:

The Insight in the background is #2, the 443k mile car.

Towed it over to a friends place near where the transport dropped it off and began work. We knew it had a fuel leak, but didn't know what to think about it. As it turns out, mice had chewed through both the fuel pump and fuel gauge sender wires, and also chewed a nice hole in the fuel line.

Spliced the wires back together and bought a new length of fuel hose while charging the dead 12V battery. Had it going in a couple of hours.

It's alive!

Drove it home(60mi), got 74MPG - which is good, it's a 2,000' elevation climb.

Car: $1000
Shipping: $800
Fuel Line: $12.46

Total cost of ownership thus far: $1812.46

It needs a few things, but minor overall. It pretty much doesn't get better than this in the Insight world. 🙂 It's actually in better condition than my current daily driver, #1, so it very well may become my daily driver once I swap all my goodies over.

needs boost

There are actually a few people who have done just that. 🙂 Supposedly a production turbo kit is in the works.

They respond really well..more than doubles output to 173HP and 220ftlbs of torque @ 12PSI, which seems to be safe thus far.

Gotta admit, that would be fun with an 1800lb car. The best part is that as long as you stay out of boost overall, it doesn't appreciably affect MPG.. But we all know that would be impossible. 😉

Insight #1 will likely become the project/experiment car, since it was difficult to hack up daily drivers. So who knows, maybe eventually...

Wow, that's cheap. 😱 If I had a ridiculous commute, I'd consider buying one at that price.

And I'd love to drive a turbo Insight. 1/4mi calc online says 173hp at 1850lbs would be mid 13's. That'd be epic. 😀

I work with a woman who, along with her husband, is turning a 2nd gen Toyota MR2 into a pure electric car. Should be interesting to see how it turns out.

They really don't ever sell for that much..even not running. Knowing what I know now, I almost wish I would have opted to just drive out there and try and fix it.. Would have saved a few hundred over having it shipped. But that seemed too iffy since I didn't really know what was wrong with it other than "fuel leak" and "won't start".

There's a guy that parts them out that I talk with a bit, and he recently bought one for $1800 at auction that was junked(not able to be put on the road again). 😱

I feel very lucky to have gotten the last two deals I have.. pretty much unheard of. This car was posted on the forums for 10 minutes before I responded, so I thought for sure I had missed it.. lol

I'd think a Mk1 or Mk3 would be better for that, given that the Mk2 has another 800lb to work with...but best of luck to them!

The owner that had his boosted to 12 psi has had some issues and it was only pushing 135 hp. Here is the thread:

http://www.insightcentral.net/forums/modifications-technical-issues/18549-production-turbo-kit.html

In the end the thread got locked when the owner started arguing with the shop that did the work. IMHO they over thought the project and were too aggressive. I plan on turboing mine soon, but only to 5 psi. There is anotehr Insight owner who did something similar in 2003 and has since clocked over 200k miles with no issues and ~60 mpg (he drives aggressively).

Grats on #3

Ah, guess I need to re-read the thread. What's with the dyno runs showing the numbers I mentioned? Maybe I misunderstood... my bad.

Damn, my yearly gas cost could pay for one at $3k. Gas would only be about $620/year. Might have to look at getting one as a DD and then be disciplined enough to drive.

Hmm.. Interesting. That's not the graph I saw, I must have missed something with the dyno graph I saw and not gotten context.

Still though, 125HP @ 7PSI would be pretty fun. 🙂

Was just about to post this

As for OP, damn what a steal... now here's a project for you: stick a Hayabusa engine in one.

Great price, you bought from a person scared to death about cost of a repair and did well. I once bought a car well below market and I think in part it's because the car was not getting warm and the seller may have been at the point they felt the car would stop costing money. I knew it was a bad thermostat, so $15 later it was fixed and I saved at least a grand easy on what it should have been!

Since I don't feel like searching at all, are all you cars the same color Eli? I swear I've only seen silver Insights on the road.

Yep, they are.. lol.

There are blue and red ones around, but silver was the most popular color.

I've seen a lime green Insight around, someone on campus has one. It has a taped-up front bumper though so it's not "pristine". Do they still make replacement parts, or is that guy just lazy? 😀

wtf, where do you find these cheap insights? They are going for over 6k around here.
1k for the car? that's ridiculous, the guy could've gotten at least 3k for it.

I want one.
