Weirdo SCSI-Scanner problem!!

I have an adaptec 2940 UW and an Hp Scanjet 4c scanner that I am trying to get to work and I have the weirdest problem. If I plug the scanner in it won't fire up!.. it's STONE DEAD!.. but if I unplug the cable it starts!!

I went to the store and got a new cable but the result is the same!!.. When I turn the puter on it will stop at post.. it finds my cdrom but then dies.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!

or direct me to someone or someplace where I can find help!

This isn't weird at all...welcome to SCSI termination! You probably need an active termination on the scanner...assuming that it is the last device on the cable. You also should check to be absolutely certain that the SCSI IDs aren't set to the same values for your scanner and CD-ROM.

Wait wait!! I think I remember that you can't run the low channel of the 2940UW from both the internal side and the external side at the same time. The 2940UW has a high side 68 pin Wide channel internal connector, a low side 50 pin connector and an external narrow 50 pin connection. Both high and low channels will work simultaneously, but only either internal OR external will work, not both int and ext at the same time. Pain but that's the way it is. In fact, now I remember why I bought a 2940Pro and a 2940U2W. They have a neat internal/external cable that ends in an external connection on a little blank that fits into an empty PCI slot for connecting external peripherals while your internals hook up to the connections inside the case. This way you are actually driving your external scanner on the internal channel. You may be able to buy just that cable from Adaptec, but I'm positive you can't run the same channel on both internal and external sides simultaneously. Sorry! Of course, if you have an old SCSI2 adapter lying around you just stick that in and use it for the scanner. It will coexist with your 2940 which has the BIOS.
