weird xp direct x problem.

Under 98, same comp, everything was fine with direct x.
Now under XP, I can't run direct x stuff. 3d mark2k1 will not work, it logs it in a error log. dxdiag fails on the second test (after the spinning cube), it seems. The error given is Direct3D test results: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)

This happens with all driver sets I've tried. I mainly run opengl games, but I need something for d3d now.

oh, and I've also tried to reinstall direct x in XP.
