weird...win2k crash to desktop when copying to other directory

I don't think I did anything to cause this problem to start so it's really weird. Now whenever I copy or cut and then paste any file or directory into a directory other than the source anywhere anytime in windows, the disk starts churning and then it closes everything, takes away the taskbar for a second and leaves with the desktop. However, if I copy or cut and paste into the source directory, it works fine. I have:

Iwill KK266plus
win2k pro fully patched
1 quantum fireball AS single master on ide0
also tried setting fail-safe values in bios...doesn't help

first thought is to checck your hard drive make sure it isn't sounding strange when you do the copy. I had a friend whose Western Digital died and the first signs were errors when copying files between volumes.

have you tried 'dragging' the file (with your right mouse button) over to the 'other' directory? it might be w2k being gay for some odd reason with the cut/copy/paste edit commands.. good luck.

no, I'm sure it's not the drive failing....I've had that happen lots of times and I know what it's like. It's gotta just be some win2k related problem or something

dragging makes no difference
