Hi guys, I recently installed a new ATI Radeon 9500 Pro on my system.

(A7V8X, AMD Athlon XP 1700+, 512MB PC-2700....etc I am using an ENERMAX Whisper 350W and a Samsung Syncmaster 755DF)

I started getting this weird whistle which I can tell is coming from the box.
My monitor flickers and the color changed randomly, from bright to brownish or yellowish.

So I started with playing with the refresh rates, I increased to 85hz and the color change decreased but the whistle is still there.
I got the latest catalysts drivers and also the latest monitors drivers thinking that could be the problem.
Still happened, exchanged the video card thinking that could be the problem and adviced by the ATI wonderful tech support...but still happens.

Anyone has any other suggetions?

I understand that there are dummies out there...

Yes, I did connect the power to the card...

Open up your computer, start it up, and try to find out exactly where it's coming from. My guess is that one of your fans is blowing air along a small gap in your case, causing a whistle.

That is what I initially thought...I opened my case and disconnected 4 fans and run the machine but it was still there...but the whistle is so high pitched that I doubt it is fan related.

Could be video card fan. Those little fans spin pretty fast, about 5,000 RPM.

I will verify the Fans and run it with as little fans as possible and try to relocate the noise...and see what happens...
In the meantime help is welcome...

Thanks!

Something on the card maybe going bad. Could be a capacitor I had to RMA mine. Don't know what was wrong but I used it in the morning. Heard something like a whistle but it was quick and didn't worry about it. Went out when I came back I took computer out of standby and screen was messed up. Garbled screen even on boot up. Since your monitor flickers and changes color I think the card's going kaput.

Could also be a crap power supply making the noise and causing EMI.

Ok guys...I exchanged the card and the problem is still there...I reformatted hard drive just to be 100% sure...and the problem is still there...

I am thinking It comes from the CPU because after playing with all the fans and trying to locate it...it seems like only happens where there is activity...

Or am I totally wrong??

Extra ideas taken

Thanks!!

Try disconnecting all your peripherals, especially any CD-ROM/DVD/Burners etc. Also, it could be your hard drive, but I suspect you would have noticed that by now. If the sound persists with all the peripherals removed (including the HD), then you are really limited to the power supply or CPU fan as likely culprits.

I'll try that but the thing is...the whistle starts when the first windows screens comes up...

I really can't understand this...

Let me play with my peripherals again...
