I let Windows do an update last night. (21H2...19044.1889) After it rebooted, about half my files on the desktop were gone...the clock had the wrong time by 1 hour, even though the time zone was correct, DST setting was correct...and, the "cumulative feature update" doesn't show in any of the update lists.
I still haven't figured out what else might be missing...or how to get things back. I THOUGHT I had the thing set to set restore points...but apparently not. :(

I've heard about people having problems with updates...I never have...until now.

(Malwarebytes and Windows Defender all show nothing found)

Sounds like your SSD is going bad. Or your RAM. It's not a WD 850X NVMe is it?

There's no such thing as a "Cumulative Feature Update."

You would have had a Cumulative Update, which updates the actual code, followed by a "Feature Update", which, these day, is really just an "enablement package".

Edition Windows 10 Home
Version 22H2
OS build 19045.2251
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4180.0

That's what I'm on, on this laptop. You're a year out of date.

That's weird. I do the updates regularly. It's currently working on 22-11 Cumulative Update # KB5019959. I may have indeed used the wrong name for the update...but regardless, the system still shows NO update for last night. Oddly enough, the system shows the most recent update as: Successfully installed on ‎8/‎11/‎2022
August 9, 2022—KB5016616 (OS Builds 19042.1889, 19043.1889, and 19044.1889)
Since then, the system has had NUMEROUS updates.

The OS drive is a new (July 2022) 2TB WD SN770 NvMe drive. You may remember, after I got the it a couple of months ago, I formatted this drive, did a fresh Windows install...and almost right away, started having issues with it "freezing" for a couple of seconds intermittently. Happens in gaming, surfing, watching videos...and when it does, the system makes a funny sound...almost like the AIO pump or a HDD groaning to a quick stop. I've been through all the event logs...don't find anything that I recognize as being out of the ordinary.

Why would an NVMe drive make a sound???

It could be your PSU, or some component on your mobo making the sound.

I'm not saying it's the NVME making the noise. Sounds like either the AIO water pump or MAYBE the spinner HDD. It's just a quick "err" when things freeze up, then back to normal.
It sure looks like whatever happened, it took my rig back to August 9.

That could be the likely culprit. Check its HDD status with Speedfan. You will know immediately if it is on its last legs. Hurry! There's no time to lose!

I can check it with SeaTools, (Seagate drive) but I don't see how that data drive could possibly cause the issues I'm having.

Sea tools would do tests and they might pass. But Speedfan's HDD status web page will show you clearly which SMART parameters are in the red zone or if there is a pending bad sector. It takes less than 10 seconds for the web page to display.

Ran both SeaTools and Speed fan. Everything APPEARS to be fine in all drives.

I just trawled through my system. Looks like just about EVERYTHING downloaded or installed after August 2022 is gone. One strange thing is this:

abc.png

C: SHOULD be the 2TB WD NVME drive...NOT the HP EX950 drive.

Better have a look at Disk Management, make sure that your 2TB NVMe hasn't changed to "RAW".

Everything LOOKS good...C: is disk 2, (2TB WD NVME) E: is Disk 1, (WD green SSD) D: is disk 0, (Seagate 2TB spinner) and F: is disk 3. (1TB HP NVME)

Did Windows get confused about which one was the primary NVMe drive and installed the update on the wrong one? Maybe your data is still there, on the other drive in the Users\yourname\Desktop folder.

I'll look into that later. COULD be.

I'm running that same basic version (19044.2251...) and the last update buggered up my system... not exactly like you are seeing, though. My system hangs all the time, now, and I'm having issues where the System will run something every so often, drawing the system down. I'm also having very slow file access and/or transfers. It's driving me bats...

I've been fighting with that as well. (and I've been bats for decades)

what to reinstall.
I cheated on my options and just copied the PF/PF86 folders and then wiped things and copied them back and it worked fine. A few things needed to be reinstalled but, the majority was just copied back.

W install from a decent drive should only take a couple of minutes anyway and if you want to be preemptive about things install all of your crap / updates and then make an image of it to store WHEN windows borks again.

Wow. I didn't know that still worked. I stopped doing this trick after Windows XP because Microsoft implemented strict security permissions for OS folders.
