Weird system slowdowns

I'm experiencing some weird system slowdowns in Windows 2000. Every now and then, Internet Explorer hangs and nothing else in the system would work... I have to close my User session (ctrl-alt-del) and log back in in order to be able to use the system again....

It's not a complete system crash, Task Manager seems to work just fine and there are no strange aps running in the bg. CPU time is 97% idle when this happens.

What can it be? Some HotFix from WU? I'm running Win2k SP3 with every critical update to date.

I used to get this when I was running Seti and Trillian both coming up from the StartUp folder. Once I made it so I manually loaded Trillian, everything was fine.

Well, I also have Trillian, but I start it manually like you do. Anyway, the last time this happened Trillian wasn't even running...

I doubt it. All complaint about performance have been reported only with XP. I have installed this update on some 300 workstations and not a single one has reported their machine slowing down. If you think it is, there is an updated version of the the patch you can try.

So I simply uninstall the version I have and apply it again using WU?

You don't even have to uninstall it. Just to to the WU site and it should see that there is an updated version.

run msconfig (I think that works under win2k) and see what is loading automatically. You can also use regedit to check the run key under microsoft, windows, current version. A third way would be to check the processes under task manager - although this only shows what is currently running not what starts automatically.

The reason I ask about this is because the only time this has happened to me is when I had a virus which loaded automatically without me knowing.

Are you running AV software? Is it up to date?

I've checked all the apps that start automatically, nothing suspicious there. Yes, I am running Norton AV Pro 2003, but it's up to date.

I tried applying the patch again, but there wasn't any updated version in WU. I guess I already have the fixed update, so it must be something else.

I haven't experience the slowdown since yesterday morning, so I'll post back when it happens again.

Thanks again for your help.

Ok, I've experienced the lockup two time this afternoon. It's really strange, explorer becomes unusable and I have to logout and log back in to continue using the system.

This is beginning to frustrate me. I'l probably re-install the god damn thing without any patches whatsoever. Just SP3 (SP4 is coming out in a few weeks anyway....)
