Weird start up issues with MSI 6600gt

Ok so i have an MSI 6600gt in my second comp, got it prolly a months ago.

Its been acting sorta weird lately, well when i turn on the comp the whole screen is in artefacts and same thing when it continues to boot to windows. Restart the comp and everything is fine :S.

The psu is ok its some 500watt cheapo brand one, but the problem is not playing games it the start up, i can play games for hours fine, which rules out the psu as it would only be effected at full load. Oh and the card is not overclocked.

So i donno, this is a new card and i would not consider that normal.
Any ideas of what could be happening with the card?

Just had it happen to me again after i got from work, it seems to happen on cold boot, when the comp has been turned off for a while.
Now i'm using it and its fine, so i got no idea wtf this card does this.

I have a Gigabyte 9600XT that does the same thing, it artifacts on cold boots but when it get restarted its fine, however I discovered one day that if I let it boot into windows, as soon as the WINDOWS XP screen dissappears and the welcome screen appears the problem seems to correct itself and the card then will work flawlessly for hours on end, it even overclocks nicely too.

I've had this card since christmas 2003 and it has done this since day one, normally I would hit the reset button at the bios screen if the screen was corrupted, but now I just let it go and the problem goes away.

the problem seem to be related to the Lower resolutions and the basic VGA that DOS uses as this card will also muck up in old dos games as well if booted from a dos floppy....but will work fine in games like HL2 and DOOM3

Yea i have no problems with it in games just what happens at cold boot, but i never waited to see what would hapen after the wibndows loading screen, will test next time.

I have sent msi and email of whats happening and the reply was that i have a faulty vga and should rma it, but when i went to talk to the local shop that i bought it from they tryed to blame it on the mainboard bios :S... anyways i think i will use it for now, i have a whole 11 month to replace it if something happens. Its flawless in games so meh i donno, i have backup onboard vga in this comp so sending it away wont be much trouble anyways.

if it mucks up in games then your card is faulty..and it would be wise to replace it ASAP....a video card that decides to cook itself can kill a mobo in the process

edit: misread. if it is fine in games and can run 3dmark on a loop for several hours or a whole day if you can spare the time to let it run, then it should be ok...but...

i dont have 3dmark instaled but i will just let rthdribl, run for like overnight that should be fine, to see if its alright.
But i have been running games on it in excess of 4 hours without any problem.

sounds like your vid card just has a dodgy VESA(if it is still used) setup for lower resolutions...like my 9600XT
