Weird Shutdown Problem

My computer just started having a problem where whenever I shut it down or hibernate, it will shut down by itself during the next boot up. However, if I pull the plug and let it sit for 10 seconds before replugging and turning it on it works just fine. This happened a few years ago and removing/replacing the CMOS battery on the motherboard seemed to fix it but hasn't helped this time around. Any ideas what is causing this?

There is a checksum set at shut down. Lets just say for arguments sake the pc marks an INI file with cleanshutdown=1

Now if the pc was interrupted in not making that 1 in the ini file then it will be a zero or a blank. If blank then checkdisk will always run.

To clear that checkbit then shut down the pc normally by clicking shut down pc then click shut down and let it fully power down on its own and do this 3 times.

After the 3rd time the drive will be considered clean and a normal shut down will always happen.

Things that stop a clean shut down is when you hold down the power button all the time and tire of waiting for it to power down on its own.

Could be software issues such as trying to write/save a file at shut down time.
Infected with virus or a very badly fragmented hard drive can slow the shutdown to a crawl if you never defrag.

A very dirty registry can also slow or hang a shutdown.

I didn't read anything in that post about a chkdsk inachu, unless you know something that wasn't in the post.

Compnewbie01, the event logs may tell you something here. See if you can find events that match up with the of the issue. Do you have a battery backup? If a built system, what power supply do you have?

When was the last time you inspected the motherboard for bad capacitors?
Your problem can be like I first stated or:
Bad caps,
virus infection
Corrupted boot sector
loose power connection
Also like you mention bad cmos battery
Too much dust inside the pc. Buy a can of compressed air.

The problem history does not show anything. I only checked the CMOS battery because it 'fixed' the problem last time and by check I mean that I took it out and put it back without replacing with a new one.

No battery backup and my PSU is an Antec 550watt that I have used for about 5-6 years.

My computer is relatively dusty but I cleaned it out a few months ago so I have a hard time thinking that is the issue.

The motherboard is an ASUS and probably about 3-5 years old.

Virus scanner hasn't picked up any issues.

How would I verify that it is/is not a corrupted boot sector?

My computer just started having a problem where whenever I shut it down or hibernate, it will shut down by itself during the next boot up.

So, let's see here:
1. You shut down/hibernate
2. You turn the computer back on with the power button I assume.
3. And then....what exactly happens?

Does it start booting up? Do nothing? Fans turn on only? Anything on the display? I don't hear any indicators from your last post, so some system specs may help here.

Sorry, I haven't been very descriptive.

I shut down/hibernate, then when I go to turn it on I press the power button or sometimes the keyboard to wake it out of hibernation. Everything speeds up normally but before anything appears on the screen it will suddenly turn off after approximately 5 seconds. After 5 more seconds the computer will sometimes restart on its own during this process with the same result.

The only way I can get it to work properly is to hold the power button for 5 seconds or pull the plug to force a shutdown. Then it will turn on normally and everything is fine until I go to turn it off/on again.

Look for this:
See if there is/are dumps in the Windows/Minidump folder (if you don't have the foldering, there are not minidumps).

And tell us:
What video card do you have?

But honestly it sounds like you have something that isn't configured just right in the BIOS. Sometimes a failing power supply will do this, but normally a tell-tale sign for a failing power supply is a system crash under heavy load.

So also tell us:
what motherboard do you have, or what model PC is it.

There are 4 files in the minidump folder. I looked it up online and the numbers associated with the file names indicate they happened last year so probably are not related to this issue.

My graphics card is an AMD Radeon HD 7870 series and has been in my current build for about 2 years.

The PSU is definitely aging but I have never had a crash when the computer is on. This problem ONLY happens during bootup.

Here is the link for the motherboard I bought back in 2011:

Just an update but the problem went away today. Windows updated itself and suddenly it does not have the same issue. The only difference is when I tap my keyboard to 'wake' my computer it takes 5-6 seconds for it to come out of hibernation where before it was normally 1 second. Not sure why this happens.

My suggestion:
- Ditch the wireless keyboard.
- Use a WIRED keyboard.

If you do this, I sense things will go much better for you
