Well I just got this pos LCD for cheap and I notice that whenever I boot up the computer as it attempt to run the bios checkup and stuff, the monitor just display an "Over range" error message on the screen. However once I get into window it can display just fine at 1024x768. I check the monitor spec and the lowest resolution it can handle is 640x400. Would it be the problem that it can't display any lower like 512x384? I'm not sure what the native resolution for my video is (it's a radeon 9550) is there any way to flash the videocard bios to modify it? Any help or suggestion would be great thanks

If the monitor doesn't support it, then there is nothing you can do. Just pray that u will never have a windows problem where u need to reinstall, i suggest if that happens, keep a spare CRT or sm.

over-range may be referring to a refresh rate you have set? Try to make sure your refresh rate is 60hz.

Does your LCD have an automatic adjustment button?

If so, try to push it when the computer's boot up screen is showing. It may take a few tries if you can't actually see anything.

I had a problem where the boot screens were so far off center that I couldn't see what was happening during boot. Pushing the auto-adjust button cured this and the monitor remembered the settings thereafter.

Thanks for all your inputs. Actually I was able to find out what the problem was. It was actually the tv-out causing the problem for some reason. Once I unplug the svideo cable from the port it all went fine. No sure how that works but glad it fixes the problem

Typical resolutions at bootup are 720x400 for text mode, and 640x480 for graphics. However, if you have a TV set connected and you happen to be in a PAL country, these will be issued at 50 Hz, which many LCD screens don't do.

ah I see that explains it since I'm in Hong Kong which happens to use PAL as video standard. Glad to learn something new...
