Weird Registry problem.

Hello all,

I just got back from doing some work for a client. It looks like a bunch a registry values were deliberately deleted. Because of this lots of programs (well known ones) won't run. More obscure programs are unaffected. Although this sounds like a virus, my scans show none. It seems like I'll be able to reinstall the programs and everything will be fine again.

Any ideas on what could have caused this?

Thanks,
Swan

Maybe your client ran a "cleanup" program and did more than the "safe" values. Otherwise I might guess a virus as well.

Would it be possible for the virus to have deleted itself after its work was done? I haven't found any trace of a virus. I also didn't see anything resembling this problem (on a very brief search) on Symantec's virus page.

I asked if anything out of the ordinary had been done before the crash, but they said no.
