weird random windows sound

All of my computers play a sound randomly that is very similar but not the same as the "click" tied to "Start Navigation" in IE. At random intervals, through my headphones / speakers, the computer will play something that sounds like a page turning or like one of those old clocks where the numbers flipped, followed a few seconds later by a very similar but different sound.

I don't think it's spyware because i can remember hearing this noise at least 5 years ago and have run all the programs regularly for the whole time. Lately, i'm wondering if it's maybe some kind of indicator that my processor is changing its speedstep thing for some reason, but i haven't been able to actually associate the sound with anything. I've got a few different computers and i've noticed it on all of them

on a google search i found somebody else with the same deal (they even recorded a clip of the actual sounds) but no solutions.

Ideas?

I think I know sound you're talking about. I get that from time to time and I don't have the slightest clue what causes it. Although, now that I think about it, I only had that sound in XP. I've never heard it from any rig running Vista...

That is quite possible. All my machines have XP installed.

Advertisments on apps that use the IE engine?

I don't have any advertisements showing and use firefox exclusively

My friend had a similar thing, turned out it was his fridge turning on and off in his room that made a clicky sound from the speakers. I guess it was some sort of interference.
