having a problem with my new radeon 9700
(running winxp, 1500+, 512 DDR, 80gb raid)

I get really odd dots in everything that has to deal with openGL or direct3D

I have a screenshot of the prob at:

http://www.sibsystems.com/pics/atiprob.jpg

I get that in pretty much every game and even in 3d screensavers.

Things ive tried to fix this:
reseated agp card
updated system bios
updated system drivers (via 4 in 1)
reformatted
tried different versions of ati drivers
updated to xp sp1

any ideas guys?? im stuck on this one!!!

thanks,
nate

well, if i were having this problem , i would call ATI tech support and tell them about it, and everything you did to fix it...if it were my card, i'd call it defective... are the defects always in the same place or does it vary? idk where you got it (online, or the store) but id try to figure out a solution fast so if it is defective, you can still return it...

There are generally four possible causes of texture flashing or missing textures with the 9700 Pro. Either it's interference from another device (i.e. a power cable from a CPU fan laying near or on the Radeon 9700 Pro), the card is getting too hot, the R9700Pro's power cable is not plugged into a dedicated power connector (note: do not use a floppy connector from yor PSU. Stick with the supplied power cable and plug into either a lead with a hard drive on it or a lead that shares with NOTHING else. Especially not a case fan), or the card is defective (usually ESD damage). Try the first three and then consider an RMA.

Be sure you are using the 6178 drivers, they are the most stable at the moment.

Why would that matter? The power is still coming from the same place. I am using a normal floppy connector and it is fine.

I noticed you have a program to play/control music in the game. What is it? I never knew or thought something like that existed.

6178 Drivers (patched 6166's)

I've spoken with ATI on several occassions and they were adamant about not plugging the Radeon 9700 Pro into a floppy connector or a power connector that shared with a DC motor (i.e. case fans). It greatly depends on the wire gauges, but they are correct in saying that this could cause interference (i.e. horizontal crawling, focal issues, even texture loss and flashing).

In spite of what ATI says, the primary cause of texture flashing is interference (i.e. power cables touching or near to card).
