i have a voodoo2. couldn't this thing be used by windows or x as the primary display? it does have 4mb of memory for the display so it is possible, right? the only problem i can think of is that it's not vga compatible and it doesn't have a text mode but that shouldn't be a problem under linux given the proper drivers.

Im not for sure, but I think that is JUST a 3d accelerator...NOT a 2d card...your primary (AFAIK) had to have some 2d capabilities...

true, it's just a 3d accelerator, but it does have 4mb for the framebuffer (and 8mb for texture). i'm asking 'cuz i decided to read the mesa documents for 3dfx cards and it says you can use two monitors: one hooked up to the voodoo2 and one hooked up to your regular card. supposedly what happens is that when you have such a setup when you run a program that utilizes the voodoo2, you can still see the video output from the other card on the other monitor.
