I'm going to be in an area without phone lines for a while and since I have quite a bit of time on my cell account I'd like to connect using my cell. I'm not sure if it can be done though. Has anyone doe this?

If you are at a place without land line, how can you be sure that there are cell sites in that area??? If indeed there are cell sites, you can buy a cellular modem PCMCIA card to connect your PC to the internet/ISP.

There is cell sevice as well as phone lines, I just don't want to pay to connect to the lines for only 3 or 4 weeks. I don't have a laptop, just going to throw my hacked I-Opener in the car when I take off. I'd like to rig something up, just not sure if it can be done.....

Yes, it can be done. Ive done it with a Nokia 6110 mobile, worked fine, but the GSM speed is limited to 9600bps.

United States is way back in the stone age when it comes to cellular communication, so if you live in the US the analogue mobiles might not support data calls at all.

and I'm happy to live in Europe :)

It depends on your phone, and your network.

I've had no problems making data calls in the UK with a nokia 7110 and 8210. In both cases, I used an infra-red link from either a palm PC (Philips Nino) or Laptop PC.

No problems at all - nice stable 9600 connection.

Not all phones support data (they may not have infra-red or a cable port, or they may simply not support data). Not all networks offer data calls as standard.
