weird PS2 mouse/KB problem

QueBert

Lifer
I build a PC for a co worker last month. He hardly uses it (still learning)

called me last night to say the mouse and KB stopped working. He also said right before that happened there were weird color lines on the monitor. He doesn't speak the best english, but from what I understand he hadn't touched any of the plugs in the back.

he brought it to me, and the PS2 ports are completly not working, I tried a different mouse/KB same thing.

the rig:

MSI mATX motherboard
mATX case 300 watt PSU
512 megs DDR-266
GForce 4 MX 440

I'm going to pick up a USB KB/MOUSE to test it further but I don't have access to them at work. I'm worried why PS2 ports would just stop working out of the blue. I've never encoutered this.

any suggestions? thanks

you need a reboot if you disconnect/reconnect the kb/mouse after the computer boots. That the legacy of ps2...It doesn't support plugnplay.

I've rebooted over and over, tried 2 different mouse and keyboard's, nothing. I'm going to pull the PC apart tonight and put it back together to see if that does anything. It's almost like the ps2 ports somehow shorted out? I've never seen that happen but I can't figure out anything else.
