WEIRD PROBLEMS!!!!

I have been having some weird problems with my parents computer lately. It has been having tons of illegal operations and other .dll errors and blue screens. Also there are registry errors then it says it will try and fix it then restart the computer. Well it never seems to fix it. I tryed reinstalling win 98 and it didnt stop the problems. Then I tryed installing Windows Me over that and that didnt fix the problems either. The only thing to do was format the harddrive. I deleted the partition, formatted and installed Windows Me on clean. And still there is error after error after error and barely anything runs now without problems. This is so weird because everything has been fine for months. Also the standby light on the computer is on all the time except if i put it on standby it goes off. THIS IS SOME WEIRD SH*T!!! Im totally confused. A freind of mine said it could be a virus that embedded it self in the harddrive, can that happen?? and if so do they need a new harddrive? Also my dad said he saw a little bomb icon where the start button is one night. That sounds like a virus to me.

Oh, also i was thinking could it be the ram, or could the virus infect the ram somehow? they have 128mb of fujisu that i think i crap because it didnt work in my athlon system and it gets bad scores.

Well I hope someone can help. Thanks

My parents computer specs:
Celeron 500
Abit be6
matrox G400 32mb
SBLive! value
128mb ram (fujitsu)
40x cdrom
linxus ethernet card
13gb WD (5400rpm)

Have you tried with another stick of memory??. To me it seems like a problem with the memory...but that's just me 🙂

Uh...that isn't good, have you run a scan on it with the most recent dat files? (Symantec/Mcafee/N.A.ect.)

Give us the EXACT wording of some of the errors would help as well.

Wouldnt reformatting destroy the virus, assuming its on the HD. But since it didnt maybe its in the bios, or even the boot sector? IS there anyway you can get rid of a virus in the bios?
If its a hardware problem, try switching out the parts(ram, video, etc) one by one until you stop getting the errors.

imhotepmp

Many newer virus's can survive a format, if they are in the MBR..usually a fdisk /mbr will clear those out. (not all of them though, these you need a low-level or zero write)
The newest CMOS virus's can actually get in the bios code and sometimes a flash will rid them and others you will need a replacement bios chip.
One of the newest ones won't activate until you reboot, where it will infect the bios by flashing itself into it so fast it's hidden by the boot process.
MBR Virus Disinfection

Well I took the 128mb out and put my 64mb of micron in there and it seems to be error free right now. It looks like it was the ram. Could there be a virus on the ram??

Thanks guys

Oh about the errors , just about every error that came up was different. There were blue screens with VMM errors and regular IO errors and registry errors that said it would reboot then try and fix the registry. Also there were a lot of RUNDLL32 errors.

Hey Good to see it's working right now...I still can't get past your Dad seeing a bomb icon where the start button is........

I would still download Norton Antivirus 2001 and maybe even TrendMicro's online scanner, Mcafee ect. to investigate the bomb incident.

There is a program called KillMe that is a utility that puts a small bomb icon with a lit fuse in your system tray...but this as far as I know is only a WinCE software program.
Edit:
All those errors COULD be because of the ram IF the virus was wiped out in the formats and reinstalls.
Have you or anyone seen the bomb icon AFTER the formats and reinstalls?

No one has seen the bomb since. My dad is the only one who says he say it. I have norton system works with antivirus. Im gonna go install that. Thanks for the help. I hope if there was a virus its gone. Im 64mb short on ram now 🙁 Mabey my dad will let me use his credit card for some new ram 🙂

how much space is there left on the hard drive
i too had that problem and took 2 and a half gigs off of it and they occur almost never now
just a thought

Sounds like the virus could be gone then, get the latest DAT files before you run the scanner and you should be clean, just short a little ram! 😉

Well there is 11 gig left out of 13. And i ran the virus scanner with the latest update and it found nothing. The only thing weird still is the standby light stays on unless you put it on standby, then it goes off and stays off until you restart. Whats that all about? Its very annoying. Also q3 is so so so slow even getting to the menu. Is there really that much difference between 64 and 128mb?

He was probably seeing things, the bomb icon (my dad does that all the time! =P) There's probably noticable, but not life-threatening performance differences w/ 64 and 128 MB, and I would stick to Win98.
